Gary Olson – \u201eGary Olson\u201c (Tapete Records)<\/h6>\n

Gary Olson arbeitet seit acht Jahren an seinem Soloalbum. Dieser lange Produktionszeitraum \u00fcberrascht nicht, wenn man bedenkt: Es w\u00e4re die erste neue Musik, die der US-amerikanische Musiker seit dem letzten Album seiner Indie-Pop-Band The Ladybug Transistor 2011 ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Gut m\u00f6glich, dass der Druck, der auf Olson lastet, gar nicht so gering ist bzw. war.<\/p>\n

Mit The Ladybug Transistor z\u00e4hlte Olson in den 90er-Jahren zu einer der Schl\u00fcsselfiguren des K\u00fcnstler*innen-Kollektivs Elephant 6<\/a>, in dem Bands wie Neutral Milk Hotel oder The Olivia Tremor Control die seltsameren Ecken des Psych-Folks erkundeten. Seine Musik war jedoch stets anschmiegsamer als die seiner Mitstreiter*innen, mehr an die golden gl\u00e4nzenden Harmonien von The Beach Boys oder The Kinks angelehnt, als an verstrahlte Psychedelia. Die Songs von The Ladybug Transistor schwebten sanft. Wie klingt solche Musik unter Druck? <\/p>\n

Wie die erste Tasse Kaffee<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Die Antwort: Federleicht. Olsons selbstbetiteltes Solodeb\u00fct entstand im Wechselspiel mit den norwegischen Produzentenbr\u00fcdern Ole Johannes und Jorn \u00c5leskj\u00e6r. Acht Jahre lang reisten Skizzen und Ideen zwischen Brooklyn und Oslo hin und her, wuchsen langsam und bedacht zu elf Songs heran. Erst die Basics, sprich Gitarre, Bass, Schlagzeug, dann Schicht um Schicht die Elemente, die Olsons Musik auszeichnen: aus der Zeit gefallene Streicharrangements. Sich gegenseitig umarmende Gesangsharmonien mit Olsons weicher Stimme im Zentrum. Seine Trompetenfanfaren als zarten Kontrapunkt. <\/p>\n

Das Ergebnis klingt so, wie sich die erste Tasse Kaffee am Morgen anf\u00fchlt. Der Opener \u201eNavy Boats\u201c h\u00e4tte auch von John Cale arrangiert sein k\u00f6nnen, so sch\u00f6n streichen die Violinen um Olsons Gesang. Die Single \u201eGiovanna Please<\/a>\u201c kommt im perfekten Spaziergang-Tempo daher, gem\u00fctlich einen Schritt vor den anderen setzend. Das Instrumental \u201eInitials DC\u201c schwebt in Zeitlupe. Selbst flottere Songs wie \u201eA Dream For Memory\u201c wirken beruhigend auf die Seele, in der entschlackenden Folk-Rock-Tradition von K\u00fcnstlern wie Steve Gunn oder Chris Cohen. Olson erschafft hier eine Welt, in der das Konzept \u201eDruck\u201c ganz fremd erscheint. <\/p>\n
