Afrozentrische Symbolik durchzieht den neuen Kurzfilm zu einem St\u00fcck des New Yorker Jazz-Saxofonisten Marcus Strickland. Eigentlich war das St\u00fcck \u201eOn My Mind\u201c (feat. Bilal, Pharoahe Monch & Greg Tate) bereits im Jahr 2018 auf Stricklands Album \u201ePeople Of The Sun\u201c erschienen. Damals war es eher ein romantischer R&B-Song mit schleppend synkopiertem Groove. \u00dcber diesem fungierte Stricklands Saxofon fast wie eine Gesangsstimme. Aber auch als Bindeglied zwischen den Genres, was im jetzt erschienenen Remix noch deutlicher wird.<\/p>\n

Schon das Original verband unterschiedliche Genres. Neo-Soul und Jazz auf der instrumentalen Ebene sind die Grundlage verschiedener Vokal-Darbietungen. Der Soul-Gesang von Bilal steht hier neben dem Rap von Pharoahe Monch und dem Spoken-Word-Beitrag von Greg Tate. Den Schriftsteller, der hier als Storyteller auftritt, beschreibt Blue Note Records als \u201eGriot\u201c. Dadurch stellt ihn das US-amerikanische Jazz-Label in eine westafrikanische musikalische Erz\u00e4hltradition. Die Bez\u00fcge auf ein afrikanisches Erbe im US-Alltag werden nicht nur durch die afrozentrische Symbolik im Kurzfilm zum Remix betont. Auch musikalisch geht die neue Version von \u201eOn My Mind\u201c radikalere Wege als das Original.<\/p>\n

Musik\u00e4sthetische Politik<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Einerseits liegt das St\u00fcck im neuen Gewand n\u00e4her am Free-Jazz. Andererseits erinnert es auch an den fragmentierten Funk von D’Angelos Album \u201eBlack Messiah\u201c. Dieses hatte D’Angelo Ende 2014 unangek\u00fcndigt als Statement gegen systemischen Rassismus und Polizeigewalt ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Proteste aufgrund der Ermordung von Afroamerikaner*innen durch Polizisten kann man dies durchaus als politische Folie des Tracks lesen. Ein St\u00fcck, das sich klanglich und politisch einreiht neben Archie Shepp, Robert Glasper und Kamasi Washington. Jazz-Musikern, die anstatt eines Genres die Vielschichtigkeit afroamerikanischer Kultur ins Zentrum r\u00fccken.<\/p>\n
