Wenn nicht, hier die Kurzfassung: Inmitten von London hat sich im Verlauf der letzten Jahre ein sehr dichtes Netz an jungen Musiker*innen gebildet. Zum Teil sind sie Brit*innen und stammen \u00fcberwiegend aus der afrikanischen Diaspora. Zusammen loten sie nicht nur aus, wie Jazz im Jahr 2020 klingen kann, sondern auch, was Jazz im Jahr 2020 \u00fcberhaupt sein kann. Eine grenzenlose Klangwelt. Ein Gemeinschaftsgef\u00fchl. Eine Revolte.<\/p>\n<p>Im Zentrum dieser Szene: Nubya Garcia. Wer einen \u00dcberblick \u00fcber den aufregenden UK-Jazz erhalten m\u00f6chte, muss sich einfach nur durch die Gastauftritte in ihrer Diskografie scrollen. Da findet man das genrevermischende Ezra Collective, sowie die zahlreichen Solotrips der Mitglieder. Da findet sich \u201eYour Queen Is A Reptile\u201c von Sons Of Kemet, das wom\u00f6glich w\u00fctendste Jazz-Album seit Charles Mingus. Und nat\u00fcrlich auch die Bands, die die 29-j\u00e4hrige Saxofonistin und Bandleaderin mit Wurzeln in Trinidad und Tobago sowie Guyana selber frontet: Das Highlife, Funk und HipHop verquirlende Septett N\u00e9rija, ihre Jazz-Fusion-Gruppe Maisha sowie ihre eigenen Nubya&#8217;s Five.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Jazz als Spiegel<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Wobei \u201efronten\u201c bei diesen basisdemokratischen Kollektiven nie ganz stimmen kann. Deswegen ist es umso spannender, wenn Garcia ein Soloalbum ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Der einzige Name auf dem Cover von \u201eSource\u201c ist ihrer. Obwohl Szene-Musiker*innen wie Ezra-Collective-Keyboarder Joe Armon-Jones mit dabei sind, h\u00e4lt Garcia alle F\u00e4den in der Hand. \u201eSource\u201c ist ganz und gar ihr Album.<\/p>\n<p>Das Ergebnis ist ein stets in aufregende Richtungen abdriftendes Album, das trotzdem nicht den Fokus verliert. Auf \u201eSource\u201c erklingen butterweicher Jazz-Funk aus der Herbie-Hancock-Schule (\u201eThe Message Continues\u201c), \u00e4therische Balladen (\u201eTogether Is A Beautfiul Place To Be\u201c) und abenteuerliche Genre-Experimente (der virtuos groovende Dub-Freakout \u201eSource\u201c). Garcias mal weiches, mal sehr aggressives Saxofonspiel ist eines von zwei Bindegliedern, die diese Exkursionen zusammenhalten. Das andere \u2013 die thematischen roten F\u00e4den, die Garcia in diesen Flickenteppich eingewoben hat: Solidarit\u00e4t zwischen Frauen (\u201eStand With Each Other\u201c), die eigene Geschichte (\u201eBefore Us: In Demerara &amp; Caura\u201c) und die Erkenntnis der eigenen inneren Grenzenlosigkeit (\u201eBoundless Beings\u201c).
