Was Callahan mit dem lyrischen Du beginnen wollte, was er mit ihm oder ihr haben wollte, lie\u00df er ungekl\u00e4rt. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Die Kraft der Leerstelle<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Callahan wei\u00df um die Kraft einer guten Leerstelle. Die Diskografie des K\u00fcnstlers ist voll von ihnen: Vom schranzigen Lo-Fi-Freak-Folk seiner Smog-Anf\u00e4nge bis zu den altersmilden und \u2013 weisen Americana-Platten, die er mittlerweile unter seinem b\u00fcrgerlichen Namen ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Erst im vergangenen Jahr erschien mit \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/sendungen\/zimmer-4-36\/2019-07-04\/14\/perfekte-versionen\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest<\/a>\u201c seine bisher umfangreichste Platte (inklusive Smog die bereits 17. Bill-Callahan-LP!), ein 20 Songs und fast 64 Minuten umspannendes Doppelalbum. In diesem Breitbandformat konnte er sich maximal ausbreiten, Raum f\u00fcr Stille und f\u00fcr Magie lassen. <\/p>\n<p>Sein neues, nur halb so langes Album \u201eGold Record\u201c ist von etwas konzentrierterer Natur. Raum l\u00e4sst Callahan trotzdem: die analog aufgenommenen Songs sind so minimalistisch arrangiert, dass das Rauschen der Bandmaschine stets klar zu h\u00f6ren ist. Der Schlagzeuger spielt wie auf Zehenspitzen. Aus weiter Ferne singen hier und da Bl\u00e4ser, doch der Fokus liegt auf seiner Stimme und seiner Gitarre. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Verheiratet mit der ganzen Welt<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Wenn er diesen Raum mit irgendetwas f\u00fcllt, dann mit seinen Texten. Dort liegt seine gr\u00f6\u00dfte Magie: Als Americana-Poet arbeitet Callahan auf einer ganz eigenen Ebene. Seine Lyrik ist zum Teil distanziert, zum Teil hoch empathisch \u2013 eine Qualit\u00e4t, die er in dieser Form vielleicht nur mit seinem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/david-berman-silver-jews-purple-mountain-92385\/\">2019 gestorbenen<\/a> Labelkollegen David Berman teilt. Wenn Callahan in eine fremde Haut schl\u00fcpft (was er sehr oft tut; der erste gesprochene Satz des Albums ist \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/hello-im-johnny-cash-33970\/\">Hello, I&#8217;m Johnny Cash<\/a>\u201c), schafft er im Perspektivwechsel zutiefst pers\u00f6nliche Eindr\u00fccke. In \u201ePigeons\u201c beobachtet ein Chauffeur ein frisch verm\u00e4hltes Paar: \u201eI\u2005picked\u2005up the newlyweds\u2005and asked them \/ Where they wanted to\u2005go \/ They said \u201aWe don&#8217;t care, we don&#8217;t know, anywhere, just\u205fgo\u2018.\u201c <\/p>\n<p>Das Paar fragt den alten Fahrer nach Liebesrat. Seine Antwort ist ein Satz f\u00fcr die Ewigkeit: \u201eAnd I said, \u201eWhen you are dating you only see each other \/ And the rest of us can go to hell \/ But when you are married, you are married to the whole wide world\u2018.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Sp\u00e4ter im Album erklingt tats\u00e4chlich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yyLUcU8pMyE\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201eLet\u2018s Move To The Country\u201c<\/a>, der eingangs erw\u00e4hnte Smog-Song. Das ohnehin schon alte St\u00fcck wirkt hier noch \u00e4lter als das Original: Callahan bricht die Instrumentalparts auf zwei zart gezupfte Akustikgitarren herunter, als w\u00e4re es ein uralter Folksong. Doch der entscheidende Unterschied: Callahan beantwortet eine \u00fcber 20 Jahre alte Frage. Die Antwort: \u201eLet\u2018s start a family \/ Let\u2018s have a baby, or two.\u201c Vier alles entscheidende, in ihrer Simplizit\u00e4t wundersch\u00f6ne Worte.
