In dieser Woche ist es \u201eColossal Youth\u201c von Young Marble Giants, das in diesem Jahr 40 Jahre alt geworden ist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Die Musik von Young Marble Giants ist, selbst in den Worten der Bandmitglieder ausgedr\u00fcckt, nicht besonders spektakul\u00e4r. Die Gitarre und Bass spielenden Br\u00fcder Philip und Stuart Moxham verglichen den Prozess des Musikmachens mit Stricken und N\u00e4hen. Ersterer beschrieb den Gesangstil von S\u00e4ngerin Alison Statton wie folgt: \u201eAlison ist keine S\u00e4ngerin! Sie singt, als w\u00e4re sie an einer Bushaltestelle oder so.\u201c Das alles sind definitiv keine Rock-\u2018n\u2018-Roll-Posen. <\/p>\n<p>Young Marble Giants wollten auch nie Rock \u2018n\u2018 Roll sein. Ihr Deb\u00fct und einziges Album \u201eColossal Youth\u201c erschien im Jahr 1980, in der Zeit des Post-Punk. Eine Zeit des Umbruchs. Acts wie The Sex Pistols oder The Clash, die wenige Jahre zuvor noch als kontrovers galten, geh\u00f6rten mittlerweile zum Establishment. Neue Bands wie Pere Ubu, The Pop Group, Gang Of Four und The Slits arbeiteten aktiv gegen das Bild des Testosteron-schwangeren Rockstars. Sie waren politisch engagiert, musikalisch experimentell und betont seltsam. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Radikal unspektakul\u00e4r<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Selbst unter diesen Freaks stachen Statton und die Moxhams hervor. Durch ihre Optik (heute nennt man das Normcore), fast schon Biederkeit, aber \u2013 vor allem \u2013 durch das Unspektakul\u00e4re ihrer Songs. Beim ersten H\u00f6ren ihrer Musik f\u00e4llt zun\u00e4chst eins auf: die Leere. Wie viel diese Band nicht macht. \u201eSearching For Mr. Right\u201c, der erste Song von \u201eColossal Youth\u201c, beginnt mit einem einsam klackenden Drumcomputer, der nur die Off-Beats, nicht aber die Bassdrum spielt. Das soll sich im Verlauf des Songs nicht \u00e4ndern. Die Moxhams f\u00fcllen die gigantischen Leerstellen nur minimal, mit einem spindeld\u00fcrren Basslauf und stoischem Gitarrenkratzen. Statton klingt tats\u00e4chlich so, als w\u00fcrde sie nur f\u00fcr sich selber singen, unwissend, dass da jemand ein Mikrofon vor ihr aufgebaut hat. <\/p>\n<p>Diese Leerstellen finden sich \u00fcberall auf dem Album. Mit diesem Ultra-Minimalismus waren Young Marble Giants deutlich radikaler als viele ihrer viel lauteren Mitstreiter*innen. Doch diese Songs, jeder von ihnen aufgenommen und gemischt in einem Zeitraum von nur 20 Minuten, sind aufregender, als sie scheinen. Das Hirn muss sich nur drauf einstellen. Auf die seltsamen Parameter, mit denen diese Band funktioniert: Ein Garage-Rock-Banger ohne Schlagzeug (\u201eInclude Me Out\u201c). Ein tieftrauriges Instrumental, gespielt von der scheinbar billigsten Orgel und dem billigsten Drumcomputer der Welt (\u201eThe Taxi\u201c). Immer wieder scheinen Melodien aus der Leere, die man nicht mehr vergisst. Kleine Pop-Meisterwerke wie \u201eBrand \u2013 New \u2013 Life\u201c. Ein Trennungslied, das minutenlang ohne Worte auskommt (\u201eN.I.T.A.\u201c). Ein konsumkritischer Punk-Song, gesungen, als w\u00e4re er ein Liebeslied (\u201eCredit In The Straight World\u201c). Am Ende dieser 15 Songs scheint diese seltsame Pop-Musik die einzige, die Sinn ergibt. Und die spektakul\u00e4rste.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Young Marble Giants bei ByteFM<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Welch enormen Einfluss dieses Album auf die Popgeschichte hatte und wer zu den prominenten Fans geh\u00f6rt(e), wurde auch in der Sendung <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/sendungen\/school-of-rock\/\">School Of Rock<\/a> beleuchtet.
