Es endet mit einem Bruce-Springsteen-Zitat. Dazwischen passiert Vieles: Eine Flucht vor der zweitbesten Slint-Cover-Band der Welt. Ein intimer Moment bei einer Cirque-du-Soleil-Show. Ein Haufen L\u00fcgen. Und dann das Finale: \u201eI bolted through the gallery \/ With cola stains on my best white shirt \/ And nothing to lose \/ Oh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IxuThNgl3YA\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I was born to run<\/a>\u201d, singt Isaac Wood und wiederholt mit steigender Hysterie einen Teil seines Bandnamens. \u201cIt&#8217;s black country out there \/ It&#8217;s black country out there.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Schnell ist klar: Black Country, New Road sind eine wahrlich exzentrische Band. Zuerst macht sich das in ihrer Musik bemerkbar: \u201eFor The First Time\u201c, das Deb\u00fctalbum des britischen Septetts, beginnt mit einem Instrumental, das innerhalb von f\u00fcnf Minuten einen wahnsinnigen Strudel aus Klezmer, Afrobeat und Noise-Rock entfaltet. Die sieben Musiker*innen entstammen einer Szene, in der das Wort \u201eGenre\u201c wenig Bedeutung hat. Genau wie andere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/black-midi-schlagenheim-album-der-woche-90370\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">junge britische Weirdos<\/a> wie Squid oder Black Midi brechen Black Country, New Road Rock-Musik auf ihre Einzelteile herunter und f\u00fcgen sie in ihrer ganz eigenen Art und Weise wieder zusammen. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Von Slint zu Bruce Springsteen in f\u00fcnf Minuten<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Das Ergebnis ist unvorhersehbar. \u201eAthens, France\u201c ist ein stetig mutierendes St\u00fcck Indie-Rock, hektisch t\u00e4nzelnd beginnend, elegisch und anmutig endend. Bass, Schlagzeug und Gitarren erinnern in ihrer atonalen Intensit\u00e4t an den <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CuqEpjcBfaU\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Post-Rock von den zitierten Slint<\/a>, vermischt mit zappeligem Math-Rock aus der Battles-Schule. Saxofonist Lewis Evans und Violinistin Georgia Ellery k\u00f6nnen mit ihren Instrumenten pure Sch\u00f6nheit und verschlingendes Chaos kanalisieren. Im Abschluss \u201eOpus\u201c bauen sie an John Coltrane erinnernde Klangwasserf\u00e4lle aus Klezmer-Tonleitern. Die Ballade \u201eTrack X\u201c klingt in der Mitte wie ein wundersch\u00f6ner Philip-Glass-Soundtrack. <\/p>\n<p>Doch, wie die einleitende Text-Analyse der Single \u201eScience Fair\u201c zeigt, beschr\u00e4nkt sich Black Country, New Roads Seltsamkeit nicht nur auf die Musik. Woods Stimme erinnert erst einmal an den sarkastisch \u00fcberdrehten Sprechgesang von Black Midis Geordie Greep, vorgetragen mit dem kehligen Bariton eines King Krule. Sein bestes Werkzeug sind aber seine collagenhaften Texte, ein dichtes Netz aus bizarren Querverweisen. Im selben Song singt er \u00fcbrigens \u201eReferences, references, references\u201c \u2013 die ultimative, neunmalkluge Selbstreferenz. Das funktioniert, gemeinsam mit seiner sich in alle Richtungen gleichzeitig ausdehnenden Band. Diese Band hat keinen Filter, jede Idee wird umgesetzt. Manchmal sogar alle gleichzeitig.
