Dry Cleaning – \u201eNew Long Leg\u201c (4AD)<\/h6>\n

Die britische Band Dry Cleaning spielt Post-Punk f\u00fcr Tee-Trinker*innen. Das ist kein m\u00fcdes Vorurteil gegen\u00fcber ihrem Herkunftsland. Die Musik von S\u00e4ngerin und Texterin Florence Shaw, Bassist Lewis Maynard, Gitarrist Tom Drowse und Schlagzeuger Nick Buxton animiert nicht zum P\u00f6beln mit Bierflasche in der Hand, oder zum w\u00fctenden Faust-in-die-Luft-Recken. Es handelt sich hier auch nicht um den von Depressionen und Selbstzweifeln zerfressenen Post-Punk, den Genre-Ikonen wie Joy Division oder The Cure produzierten. Dry Cleaning rasten nicht aus und brechen auch nicht zusammen. Sie beobachten. Und lehnen sich zur\u00fcck. <\/p>\n

Das klingt jetzt erst einmal wenig aufregend. \u201eAufregend\u201c wollen Dry Cleaning aber auch gar nicht sein. Sowohl auf ihren bisherigen zwei EPs als auch auf dem jetzt erscheinenden Deb\u00fctalbum \u201eNew Long Leg\u201c demonstriert Shaw mit ihrem Sprechgesang pure Lakonie, immer ein bisschen distanziert. Auch wenn sie bizarre Situationen aus der Ich-Perspektive<\/a> beschreibt, wirkt sie, als w\u00fcrde sie Monate sp\u00e4ter davon berichten \u2013 und nicht mitten im Geschehen sein, wie beispielsweise die Spoken-Word-Paranoia von ihren Landsleuten Black Country, New Road suggeriert. Buxton ist ein hochkonzentrierter Schlagzeuger, der genau wei\u00df, dass manchmal ein einziger Beat f\u00fcr einen Song ausreicht. Maynards Bass wechselt elegant zwischen stoischem Gepumpe und melodischem Get\u00e4nzel, ohne sich offensiv in den Vordergrund zu spielen. Drowses Gitarre ist das dissonanteste Element ihres Sounds, mit verzerrten Hallfahnen und kantigen Rhythmusriffs, doch auch die sind mehr klirrend als explosiv. <\/p>\n

Lakonischer Post-Punk<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Und dennoch, trotz all der lakonischen Distanz, fesselt \u201eNew Long Leg\u201c von der ersten Sekunde. Das liegt einerseits an Shaws wundervollen Texten. Im Opener \u201eScratchcard Lanyard\u201c beschreibt sie pr\u00e4zise und witzig zugleich jugendliche Seltsamkeit:\u201eI’ve come here to make a ceramic shoe \/ And I’ve come to smash what you made.\u201c In \u201eStrong Feelings<\/a>\u201c haut sie ein bet\u00f6rend seltsame S\u00e4tze \u00fcber menschliche Zweisamkeit heraus: \u201eMy only ambition in life is to grip the roots of your hair \/ You just want to be liked.\u201c So meisterhaft subtil vergiftete Zeilen wie diese lauern in jedem der zehn Songs von \u201eNew Long Leg\u201c, egal ob Shaw \u00fcber Actionhelden (\u201eJohn Wick\u201c) oder erm\u00fcdende Sozialevents (\u201eLeafy\u201c) singt. Genauso meisterhaft subtil ist die von PJ-Harvey-Stammproduzent John Parish aufgenommene Instrumentalarbeit, die in jedem Track f\u00fcr feine \u00dcberraschungen gut ist. Ein verschluckter Snare-Schlag in \u201eJohn Wick\u201c. Eine kurze Ambient-Noise-Exkursion in \u201eEvery Day Carry\u201c. \u201eNew Long Leg\u201c zeigt eine Band, die auch, wenn sie sich zur\u00fccklehnt und beobachtet, messerscharf und faszinierend ist. <\/p>\n
