Dementsprechend klangen die sechs Songs von \u201eLove Is Not An Empire\u201c auch: weit, ein bisschen melancholisch und vor allem warm. Eine Sammlung von organischen Folk-Songs. \u201eChoirs To Heaven\u201c, das nun erscheinende zweite Studioalbum des Duos, klingt ein bisschen anders. Und zwar so k\u00fchl und metallisch wie eine leerstehende, nur vom Mondlicht beleuchtete Lagerhalle. Kein Wunder, schlie\u00dflich wurde es auch in ihrer Wahlheimat Berlin aufgenommen. <\/p>\n<p>Diese Entwicklung ist weniger \u00fcberraschend, als sie sich liest. Der kalte Sound von \u201eChoirs To Heaven\u201c erinnert stark an \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/lea-porcelain-hymns-to-the-night-album-der-woche-70952\/\">Hymns To The Night<\/a>\u201c, dem 2017 ver\u00f6ffentlichten Deb\u00fctalbum von Lea Porcelain. Es ist also eine R\u00fcckkehr zum Ursprung, zu dem pulsierenden Synth-Pop-Post-Punk-Hybridklang, der Produzent Julien Bracht und S\u00e4nger Markus Nikolaus vom deutschen Indie-Geheimtipp zum internationalen Next Big Thing gebracht hat. Das mag ein Weg zur\u00fcck in die Komfortzone sein, doch das ist \u00fcberhaupt nichts Schlechtes. Denn diese Komfortzone steht den Beiden \u00fcberaus gut. \u201eChoirs To Heaven\u201c ist ein lautes, dramatisches Album, gef\u00fcllt mit frisseligen Synthesizer-W\u00e4nden, seufzenden The-Cure-Gitarren und Drumpatterns, deren direkt aus den 80er-Jahren abgezwackter Gated-Reverb gef\u00fchlte Ewigkeiten lang nachhallt. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Kalter Sound, warmes Herz<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Nikolaus\u2019 Gesang erdet das Drama. Anstatt in Sisters-Of-Mercy-eske K\u00e4sigkeit abzudriften, bleibt er stets subtil, verleiht dem unterk\u00fchlten Sound eine zutiefst menschliche Note. Mal erinnert sein leicht zitternder Bariton an Editors-S\u00e4nger Tom Smith, mal an das resignierende Seufzen eines Matt Berningers. Und dann, in \u201eFuture Hurry Slow\u201c, kanalisiert er mit hohem Falsett pl\u00f6tzlich den Thom Yorke aus der \u201eThe-Bends\u201c-\u00c4ra \u2013 w\u00e4hrend sich das von einer sanften Akustikgitarre getragene Arrangement nahtlos in \u201eLove Is Not An Empire\u201c einf\u00fcgen k\u00f6nnte.
