Michels war in den Nullerjahren Teil von gleich zwei einflussreichen Retro-Soul-Bands: Sharon Jones &#038; The Dap-Kings und Lee Fields &#038; The Expressions. Als Teil des Produzenten-und Label-Duos Truth &#038; Soul arbeitete er an unz\u00e4hligen LPs mit, von Jungstars wie Aloe Blacc bis zu gestandenen Legenden wie Dr. John. 2016 gr\u00fcndete er dann zusammen mit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/sendungen\/stop-the-world\/2017-04-06\/00\/\">Danny Akalepse<\/a> das Label Big Crown Records, das unter anderem die musikalische Heimat von Retro-Acts wie Bobby Oroza oder The Shacks ist. Mit seiner aktuellen Formation El Michels Affair hat er erst im Fr\u00fchjahr 2021 das Album \u201eYeti Season\u201c  ver\u00f6ffentlicht \u2013 eine Hommage an t\u00fcrkischen und indischen Retro-Funk und -Soul. Man kann mit Fug und Recht behaupten, dass sich Michels in dieser Welt sehr gut auskennt. <\/p>\n<p>Eines der j\u00fcngeren Alben, die Michels produzierte, ist \u201eEkundayo\u201c, das 2020 ver\u00f6ffentlichte zweite Album von Liam Bailey. Der britische Musiker und sein Produzent experimentierten darauf sowohl mit kunstvollen R&#038;B-Sounds als auch mit Reggae und Dub. Bailey konnte sich hier seinen jamaikanischen Wurzeln n\u00e4hern, f\u00fcr Michels war dies jedoch mehr oder weniger musikalisches Neuland. Es scheint den Beiden auf jeden Fall gefallen zu haben: Denn Bailey und Michels haben das Album nun erneut aufgenommen \u2013 und zwar als Dub-Version. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Organischer, detailverliebter Dub<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Das ist, der Geschichte des Genres geschuldet, erst einmal nicht \u00fcberraschend. Das Remixen hat im Dub lange Tradition: Pionierfiguren wie King Tubby oder Lee \u201eScratch\u201c Perry starteten das Genre mit durch Hall- und Delay-Effekte gejagte Neuaufnahmen von \u00e4lteren Reggae-Mixen. Michels und Bailey folgen dieser Tradition, wenn auch etwas aufw\u00e4ndiger: Ihre \u201eEkundayo Inversion\u201c sind keine Remixe, sondern komplette Neuaufnahmen. <\/p>\n<p>\u00dcberraschender ist, mit welcher Leichtigkeit das Ergebnis aus den Boxen wummert. \u201eEkundayo Inversions\u201c ist kein experimentelles Gimmick. Die Songs wirken eher so, als h\u00e4tten sie schon immer so geklungen. Michels audiophile Detailverliebtheit l\u00e4sst den Bass weich und rund erscheinen und auch die restlichen Instrumente strahlen klar definiert durch den Dub-Nebel. Baileys warme Stimme klingt im besten Sinne aus der Zeit gefallen. Selbst die im Original weit vom Thema entfernten St\u00fccke wie \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gqwHu6X8yhc\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don&#8217;t Blame NY<\/a>\u201c (das sich in seiner urspr\u00fcnglichen Version sehr gut in Frank Oceans R&#038;B-Meilenstein \u201eBlonde\u201c einf\u00fcgen k\u00f6nnte) klingen hier nach organischem Dub. Auf \u201eUgly Truth\u201c ert\u00f6nt sogar der auditive Ritterschlag: in Form eines Gastauftritts von Genre-Meister Lee \u201eScratch\u201c Perry pers\u00f6nlich. <\/p>\n<p>Ver\u00f6ffentlichung: 13.
