Dass Corinne Drewery und Andy Connell f\u00fcr diese unfassbar elegante Band zusammenfanden, verdanken wir mehreren gl\u00fccklichen Zuf\u00e4llen. So kam Connell beispielsweise aus einer sehr viel raueren musikalischen Umgebung. Nach Anf\u00e4ngen bei der Post-Punk-Band The Immediates stieg der Musiker aus Manchester bei der Punk-Funk-Band A Certain Ratio ein. Zum klassischen Funk von James Brown hatte er nie einen Zugang gefunden. F\u00fcr neue funky Str\u00f6mungen hingegen waren seine Ohren offen und er begann, mit dem Magazine-Drummer Martin Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=te-AnJKFUP4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elektro-Funk-Tracks<\/a> zu produzieren. Im n\u00e4chsten Schritt sicherten sie sich mit der S\u00e4ngerin Diane Charlemagne von der Brit-Funk-Band 52nd Street einen Major-Deal.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Einnehmende Pop-Eleganz<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Diesen Brit-Funk-Einfluss h\u00f6rt man noch auf Swing Outs Sisters 1987er Deb\u00fctalbum \u201eIt&#8217;s Better To Travel\u201c. Aber die Stimme ist eine andere, da Charlemagne aus vertraglichen Gr\u00fcnden nicht mehr als S\u00e4ngerin infrage kam. An ihre Stelle trat Corinne Drewery aus Nottingham, die Connell im Club The Ha\u00e7ienda in Manchester kennenlernte. Allerdings hatte sie \u00fcberhaupt keine professionelle musikalische Erfahrung. Sie war Model und Modedesignerin. Daf\u00fcr hatte sie Stil und Geschmack und war wie ihre ehemalige Kommilitonin Sade eine begabte S\u00e4ngerin. Zudem teilte sie mit Connell musikalische Vorlieben, die dieser noch nicht hatte ausleben k\u00f6nnen. So mochten beide den Jazz des Blue-Note-Labels, die gro\u00dfen Pop-Entw\u00fcrfe von Burt Bacharach und Jimmy Webb sowie die Soundtracks von John Barry und Ennio Morricone.<\/p>\n<p>Die britischen Pop-80er waren eine gute Zeit f\u00fcr diese Mischung. Auf ihrem zweiten Album \u201eKaleidoscope World\u201c fanden Swing Out Sister zu ihrem Sound. W\u00e4hrend der Aufnahmen stiegt Jackson aus, doch daf\u00fcr hatte sich ein perfekt symbiotisches neues Songwriting-Duo gefunden. Tats\u00e4chlich konnten sie zwei ihrer Helden f\u00fcr ihre zweite LP gewinnen. W\u00e4hrend John Barry ihnen in einem Anruf gestattete, eine von ihm geschriebene Songpassage zu benutzen, arrangierte Jimmy Webb f\u00fcr zwei St\u00fccke die Streicher. Doch der Hitsong ist der Albumopener, unser Track des Tages. Mit Bacharach&#8217;scher 60s-Eleganz singt Drewery einen hymnischen Popsong.
