Der New Yorker Musiker James Chance ist im Alter von 71 Jahren gestorben. James Alan Sigfried, wie Chance eigentlich hie\u00df, stammte urspr\u00fcnglich aus Milwaukee, wo er in den Bands James Siegfried Quintet und Death spielte. Er zog 1975 nach New York City und wurde 1976 Teil der Band Flaming Youth. Gemeinsam mit Lydia Lunch, die damals seine Mitbewohnerin war, rief er sp\u00e4ter die Formation Teenage Jesus And The Jerks ins Leben. The Contortions gr\u00fcndete er 1977. Deren einziges Album \u201eBuy The Contortions\u201c erschien gut zwei Jahre sp\u00e4ter, nachdem Brian Eno einige Songs der Band f\u00fcr die Kompilation \u201eNo New York\u201c aufgenommen hatte.<\/p>\n

James Chance gr\u00fcndete mit James White And The Blacks eine weitere, nahezu identische besetzte Band, mit der er 1979 die Platte \u201eOff White\u201c ver\u00f6ffentlichte. Insgesamt 20 Longplayer nahm der Musiker im Laufe seiner rund 40-j\u00e4hrigen Karriere auf. Sein Markenzeichen: eine bisweilen sperrige und quirlige Melange aus Free Jazz, Funk und Punk-Elementen. Dazu war er ber\u00fcchtigt f\u00fcr seine konfrontative Art, die bei Konzerten gelegentlich sogar in Streit mit dem Publikum m\u00fcndete. <\/p>\n

Die Todesursache ist derzeit nicht bekannt, wohl aber, dass der Musiker schwere gesundheitliche Probleme hatte. Ende 2023 hatten Freund*innen eine Crowdfunding-Kampagne gestartet, um die medizinischen Behandlungskosten zu decken.<\/p>\n
