Mourning [A] BLKstar \u2013 \u201eAncient\/\/Future\u201c (Don Giovanni)<\/h6>\n

Mourning [A] BLKstar tragen die Trauer schon im Namen, un diesem macht das US-amerikanische Kollektiv wahrlich alle Ehre. 2020 erschienen sie mit ihrem Durchbruchsalbum \u201eThe Cycle\u201c auf der internationalen Bildfl\u00e4che. \u00c4hnlich wie ihre britischen Kolleg*innen Sault kombinieren sie verschiedene Sounds der afrikanischen Diaspora zu einer emotional und inhaltlich komplexen Mischung aus Soul, HipHop, R&B und Jazz. In der sowohl Raum f\u00fcr politische Wut als auch f\u00fcr kollektives Trauern ist. Auf ihrem neuen Album \u201eAncient\/\/Future\u201c spielen sie nun sieben Songs vom Ende der Welt, dem Verlust der W\u00fcrde und vom Widerstand.<\/p>\n

Doch wer bei \u201eTrauermusik\u201c nun wehleidige und melancholische Kl\u00e4nge im Ohr hat, denkt \u201eTrauermusik\u201c hier ausschlie\u00dflich als westeurop\u00e4isches Konzept. Vergleicht man beispielsweise einen grabesschweren Trauermarsch<\/a> von Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin mit dem lebendigen Klang einer New Orleans Jazz Funeral<\/a>, wird dies klar. Mourning [A] BLKstar kommen zwar nicht aus Louisiana, sondern aus Cleveland, Ohio, entsprechen aber dennoch diesem Geist. So er\u00f6ffnet \u201eLiterary Witches\u201c dieses schmerzerf\u00fcllte Album mit donnerndem Psych-Rock. Mit kreischenden Blechbl\u00e4sern, furiosen Trommelwirbeln und hektischen Call-And-Response-Ges\u00e4ngen. \u201eBeating heart against my breasts \/ A vest I can\u2019t part for bleeding out so\u201c, rufen sich die S\u00e4nger*innen LaToya Kent und James Longs zu. Eine Jazz-Beisetzung f\u00fcr unseren sterbenden, \u201eim Krieg mit sich selbst stehendem\u201c Planeten.<\/p>\n

Trauer, Trotz, Triumph<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Das abschlie\u00dfende Mantra, \u201eI refuse to dig holes till I lie still\u201c, ist eines des Widerstands. Und im Widerstand geht es auf \u201eAncient\/\/Future\u201c weiter, mit \u201eAlong The Red Rim, The Sun Shines\u201c, das mit an Algiers erinnerndem Gospel-Post-Punk beginnt und mit schwerem Doom-Soul endet, w\u00e4hrend Longs die \u201emotherfuckers in charge\u201c anprangert. Auch in \u201eHer Song\u201c rechnet Kent mit frauenhassenden Republikaner*innen und der Doppelmoral einiger Demokrat*innen ab: \u201eThis cultures doubles as rape \/ At the bottom of a liberal debate.\u201c Die Geige von Gastmusikerin Caitlin Edwards unterstreicht den Schmerz, der die Grundlage dieser Wut bildet. Am Ende des Songs bleibt neben Leid aber auch ein erhabener Stolz zur\u00fcck. \u201eWe are the light \/ Black beyond atoms\u201c, wiederholt Kent immer wieder, umarmt von Trompeten und Posaunen.<\/p>\n

In diesem widerst\u00e4ndigen Stolz endet auch das Album, mit \u201eJunee\u201c. Im ausgedehnten Soul-Balladen-Feeling ziehen Mourning [A] BLKstar alle musikalischen Register: Gitarre, Trompete und Posaune solieren, w\u00e4hrend Kent und Longs ihre Stimmen in die H\u00f6he schie\u00dfen lassen. So schlie\u00dft \u201eAncient\/\/Future\u201c nicht mit Trauer, nicht in Niedergeschlagenheit oder Akzeptanz. Mourning [A] BLKstar zeigen all diese komplexen Emotionen und b\u00fcndeln sie zu etwas Neuem: zum trotzigen Triumph!<\/p>\n
