Der kanadische Orgelspieler, Keyboarder und Saxofonist Eric \u201eGarth\u201c Hudson ist im Alter von 87 Jahren in New York gestorben. Er war bis zu dem Zeitpunkt das letzte verbliebene lebende Gr\u00fcndungsmitglied von The Band, bekannt als Begleitband von Bob Dylan und als eigenst\u00e4ndiges Projekt.<\/p>\n

Garth Hudson wuchs mit musikalischen Eltern auf und kam fr\u00fch mit verschiedenen Musikrichtungen in Kontakt. Er spielte auf dem Akkordeon Country; auf der Orgel klassische Musik am Konservatorium in Toronto und Trauerlieder auf Bestattungen. In seinen ersten Rock-\u2019n\u2019-Roll-Bands war er als Pianist und Saxofonist aktiv. Hudson benutzte seine Instrumente nicht nur, um darauf zu spielen. Er baute sie auch auseinander und schraubte an ihnen herum, um neue Sounds zu kreieren. So kam es dazu, dass er zum Beispiel an der Entwicklung des Yamaha-Synthesizers CS-80 beteiligt war.<\/p>\n

Ende der 50er wurde Hudson Mitglied von The Hawks. Zun\u00e4chst waren The Hawks Begleitband von Rockabilly-S\u00e4nger Ronnie Hawkins, trennten sich jedoch nach einiger Zeit von ihm. Unter dem neuen Namen The Band begannen sie eine Zusammenarbeit mit Bob Dylan. 1969 erschien das erste eigenst\u00e4ndige Album von The Band: \u201eMusic From Big Pink<\/a>\u201c. Auf diesem ist besonders der Song \u201eChest Fever\u201c ein Zeugnis von Garth Hudsons K\u00f6nnen. So er\u00f6ffnet er mit einem Orgelsolo, das Klassik und Jazz verbindet. <\/p>\n

Erg\u00e4nzend zu seiner Arbeit mit The Band ver\u00f6ffentlichte Garth Hudson 2001 das Soloalbum \u201eThe Sea To The North\u201c. Er spielte im Verlauf seiner Karriere mit zahlreichen bekannten Musiker*innen wie Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton und Norah Jones.<\/p>\n
