Mit \u201ePacific 202\u201c schrieben 808 State im Jahr 1989 Dancefloor-Geschichte. Oder um es genauer zu sagen: mit der Single, die unseren Track des Tages enthielt. Darauf sind verschiedene Variationen desselben St\u00fccks, das in allen Versionen \u201ePacific\u201c im Namen tr\u00e4gt. Am bekanntesten ist der Track wom\u00f6glich als \u201ePacific State\u201c, wobei sich unter Fans die \u201e202\u201c-Version besonderer Beliebtheit erfreut. Riesig sind die Unterschiede zwischen den meist wie auch die Band nach Klangerzeugern der Firma Roland (202, 303, 707, 909) benannten Tracks ohnehin nicht. Das m\u00f6gen DJs und Nerds vielleicht anders sehen als fachfremdes Publikum. Aber genau darin bestand die St\u00e4rke des Durchbruchsst\u00fccks des damaligen Duos bis Trios aus Manchester. Wie zentral die Rolle des frisch ausgestiegenen Gerald Simpson (A Guy Called Gerald) f\u00fcr das St\u00fcck war, ist ungekl\u00e4rt. Sicher hingegen ist, dass der Track, den die anderen beiden, Graham Massey und Martin Price, der heute 70 wird, ver\u00f6ffentlichten, Rave-Musik aus dem Underground heraus hievte.<\/p>\n

Zu dem Erfolg trugen neben einem guten Netzwerk in der Club-Szene und kreativer Energie vor allem zwei ungew\u00f6hnliche Ideen bei. Das gute Netzwerk f\u00fchrte dazu, dass zwei DJs im Club Thunderdome begannen, das Demo-Tape zu spielen. Obschon es ein Tanztempel der h\u00e4rteren Gangart war, muss das St\u00fcck mit seinen samtig-weichen Detroit-Techno-Akkorden dort funktioniert haben. Dadurch ermutigt, pressten Massey und Price White-Label-Maxis. Vor der regul\u00e4ren Ver\u00f6ffentlichung beendete das St\u00fcck ein halbes Jahr lang die N\u00e4chte des legend\u00e4ren Madchester-Clubs Ha\u00e7ienda. Wenngleich 808 State keine Radio-Promo machten, fiel die Scheibe in die H\u00e4nde des BBC-DJs Gary Davies, der begann, das St\u00fcck zu spielen. Als die Single erschien, ging sie in die britischen Mainstream-Top-10. Teil der Anziehungskraft bestand in einem Vogelschrei. Fasziniert von 1950er-Exotica von Martin Denny oder Arthur Lyman, hatten 808 State den Ruf des Eistauchers von einer Sample-Diskette eingebaut. Heute ist das ikonische Ger\u00e4usch untrennbar mit dem Track verbunden. Nicht minder ikonisch und ungew\u00f6hnlich ist die beruhigende Saxofon-Figur \u00fcber den hibbeligen Synths \u2013 ein Tribut an Pharoah Sanders.<\/p>\n
