In dieser Woche ist es \u201eVoodoo\u201c von D'Angelo, das in diesem Jahr 25 Jahre alt geworden ist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Michael Eugene Archer tr\u00e4umte oft von Marvin Gaye. Das erste Mal am 1. April 1984, an dem Tag, an dem die US-Soul-Legende von seinem eigenen Vater erschossen wurde. \u201eEr kam direkt auf mich zu, sch\u00fcttelte meine Hand, schaute mir in die Augen und sagte: \u201aSch\u00f6n, Dich zu sehen\u2018. Meine Hand lie\u00df er nicht mehr los\u201c, erz\u00e4hlte Archer sp\u00e4ter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/dangelo-gq-june-2012-interview\" target=\"_blank\">dem GQ Magazine in einem seiner seltenen Interviews<\/a>. Hier teilte er auch einen weiteren Traum. Die Perspektive war anders: Gaye ging nicht auf ihn zu, sondern Archer ihm hinterher. Bis er gemeinsam mit seiner Familie in einen Whirlpool stieg und ihm wieder tief in die Augen sah: \u201eDu fragst Dich bestimmt, warum Du immer wieder von mir tr\u00e4umst.\u201c Archer wachte auf. Und tr\u00e4umte nie wieder von Marvin Gaye. Es war das Jahr 1993 und der 19-J\u00e4hrige hatte gerade einen Plattenvertrag mit EMI Music unterschrieben. Sein neuer K\u00fcnstlername: D\u2019Angelo.<\/p>\n<p>Der Geist von Gaye ist in der Musik auf \u201eBrown Sugar\u201c, dem 1995 ver\u00f6ffentlichten D\u2019Angelo-Deb\u00fctalbum, omnipr\u00e4sent. \u201eBrown Sugar, babe, I gets high off your love \/ I don&#8217;t know how to behave\u201c, croont der 1974 in Richmond geborene Priester-Sohn mit einer Sinnlichkeit, die man wahrscheinlich seit \u201eSexual Healing\u201c nicht mehr geh\u00f6rt hatte. D\u2019Angelo etablierte sich sofort als multi-begabtes Genie, das Respekt vor der alten Schule hatte. Die Musik nutzte Elemente von HipHop und modernerem Nineties-R&amp;B, doch der Spirit war durch und durch Soul und Funk.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Soul-Sound der Zukunft<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Doch mit dem Nachfolger schuf er etwas, das neu und alt, Marvin Gaye und A Tribe Called Quest, nicht nur noch besser zusammenf\u00fchrte \u2013 sondern transzendierte. D\u2019Angelo wollte den Soul-Sound der Zukunft finden. Daf\u00fcr folgte er nicht mehr seinen Vorbildern. Sondern flog direkt \u00fcber ihre K\u00f6pfe. Dieses Meisterwerk, \u201eVoodoo\u201c, wurde dieses Jahr 25 Jahre alt.<\/p>\n<p>Die Essenz dieser Transzendenz fand D\u2019Angelo nicht etwa im aufw\u00fchlenden Soul von Gaye, sondern in den Beats von J Dilla. Dieser HipHop-Produzent wurde durch seine h\u00e4ndisch eingespielten Drumpatterns legend\u00e4r: Ein J-Dilla-Instrumental ist nicht von digitaler Software geradegezogen, sondern immer ein kleines bisschen neben dem Takt \u2013 und dadurch unfassbar lebendig. Genau diesen gleichzeitig modernen und sehr menschlichen \u201elaid-back\u201c Sound wollten D\u2019Angelo und seine kreativen Mitstreiter (allen voran The-Roots-Drummer Ahmir \u201eQuestlove\u201c Thompson, sein gr\u00f6\u00dfter musikalischer Partner auf diesem Album) rekonstruieren.<\/p>\n<p>Und man muss nur einmal lauschen, wie wunderbar smooth Bassist Pino Palladino im Opener \u201ePlaya Playa\u201c das Metronom ausdribbelt, um zu merken, dass dieses Vorhaben meisterhaft gl\u00fcckte. Alle von der Rhythmusgruppe weit offengelassenen Zwischenr\u00e4ume sind mit H\u00f6rnern und Wah-Wah-Gitarre gef\u00fcllt und doch atmet alles ruhig, zur\u00fcckgelehnt und entspannt. D\u2019Angelos Jahrhundert-Falsett l\u00e4sst hier sogar einen relativ simplen Text \u00fcber Basketball erotisch wirken: \u201eBring the drama, playa \/ Give me all you got \/ Make your move \/ Shoot your best shot.\u201c<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Himmel &#038; H\u00f6lle vereint<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sehr sexuell klingt auch der Song \u201eDevil\u2019s Pie\u201c, mit seiner horny Bass-Line und dem knisternden, von DJ Premier beigesteuerten Beat. D\u2019Angelos Kunst wurde und wird gerne als Sex-Musik abgetan (was ja an sich nichts Verwerfliches ist), nicht zuletzt auch dank des Musikvideos zum Album-Hit \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SxVNOnPyvIU\">Untitled (How Does It Feel?)<\/a>\u201c. Doch sp\u00e4testens hier zeigt sich D\u2019Angelo aber als komplexerer Texter, mit Zeilen, die die Beziehung des streng religi\u00f6sen Priester-Sohnes zum Hedonismus reflektieren: \u201eWho am I to justify \/ All the evil in our eye \/ When I myself feel the high \/ From all that I despise?\u201c Sp\u00e4ter kommt noch die biblische Figur Jezebel (bzw. Isebel im Deutschen) hinzu: \u201eAll them fools whose soul&#8217;s for sale \/ Sitting next to the Jezebel \/ Demons screamin&#8216; in my ear \/ All my anger, all my fear\u201c. Himmel und H\u00f6lle sind hier nah beieinander.<\/p>\n<p>Die weitere Tracklist von \u201eVoodoo\u201c ist eine gnadenlose Aneinanderreihung von \u00fcberragenden Momenten. Die Ballade \u201eSend It On\u201c, in der D\u2019Angelos Kopfstimme den gesamten Soul-Kanon von Otis Redding \u00fcber Sam Cooke bis, nat\u00fcrlich, Marvin Gaye channelt \u2013 und sich m\u00fchelos einreiht. Der extrem klebrige Funk-Groove von \u201eChicken Grease\u201c. Das paradox betitelte \u201eSpanish Joint\u201c, in dem D\u2019Angelo und seine Band f\u00fcr ein paar magische Sekunden pl\u00f6tzlich wie Fela Kutis Africa \u201870 klingen. Die besagte Single \u201eUntitled \u2026\u201c, die sich im Verlauf von sieben Minuten langsam zu einem mehrstimmigen, kathartischen H\u00f6hepunkt auft\u00fcrmt, den man so im R&amp;B bis dato noch nie geh\u00f6rt hatte. Das spirituelle Finale \u201eAfrica\u201c, das das Album mit abstrakt klimpernden Kalimbas zart beendet.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ein tragisches Ende<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>F\u00fcr Michael Eugene Archer war dieses Meisterwerk Fluch und Segen zugleich. Es gewann zwei Grammys und wurde schnell als Meilenstein der Neo-Soul-Bewegung gefeiert, doch D\u2019Angelos neuer Status als Sex-Symbol und Genie machte ihm zu schaffen. Die folgenden Jahre waren von Drogen-Missbrauch, Depression und pers\u00f6nlichen Trag\u00f6dien gepr\u00e4gt. Es sollte 14 Jahre dauern, bis er mit \u201eBlack Messiah\u201c endlich sein absolut ebenb\u00fcrtiges drittes Album ver\u00f6ffentlichte. Dann starb D\u2019Angelo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/die-revolution-des-grooves-zum-tod-von-dangelo-154774\/\">am 25. Oktober 2025 im Alter von nur 51 Jahren<\/a> an den Folgen von Bauchspeicheldr\u00fcsenkrebs. Ein tragisches Ende einer beispiellosen Karriere.
