Jill Scott ist eine geduldige Frau. Das stellt die Soul-Musikerin aus Philadelphia direkt im ersten Satz ihres ersten neues Albums, dem ersten seit fast elf Jahren, klar: \u201eI\u2019ve been manifesting patience\u201c. Auch in den sozialen Medien klang die S\u00e4ngerin und Songwriterin bei der LP-Ank\u00fcndigung im vergangenen Dezember \u00e4hnlich: \u201eMein Prozess funktioniert wie folgt: Ich warte, bis ich inspiriert werde. Und das braucht Zeit, bis die W\u00f6rter aus meinem Mund flie\u00dfen.\u201c Diese Ansagen k\u00f6nnten, gemeinsam mit dem leicht defensiven Albumtitel \u201eTo Whom It May Concern\u201c, ein Bild von Bescheidenheit von malen.<\/p>\n

Doch dann prescht Song Nr. zwei \u201eBe Great\u201c mit glamour\u00f6sen Harfen-Arpeggios und bassigen Posaunen-Fanfaren von Gastmusiker Trombone Shorty los, w\u00e4hrend Scott mit l\u00e4ssigem Crooning ihre wahre Mission verk\u00fcndet: \u201eI walk into the room and let them see god\u201c. Und man glaubt es ihr sofort.<\/p>\n

Liebevolle und dringliche Kampfansagen<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Es ist nicht so, dass Jill Scott irgendjemandem irgendetwas beweisen muss. Ihr Deb\u00fctalbum \u201eWho Is Jill Scott?: Words And Sounds Vol. 1\u201c aus dem Jahr 2000 gilt, zusammen mit D\u2019Angelos \u201eVoodoo<\/a>\u201c und Erykah Badus \u201eMama\u2019s Gun<\/a>\u201c, als Standardwerk des Neo-Soul. Auch die anschlie\u00dfenden LPs ihrer \u201eWords-And-Sounds\u201c-Trilogie sind moderne Klassiker, angetrieben von ihrem kr\u00e4ftigen Soul-Sopran, mit dem sie sowohl Oldschool-R&B-Balladen als auch erdigen HipHop intonieren kann.<\/p>\n

Nach der Ver\u00f6ffentlichung ihrer f\u00fcnften Platte \u201eWoman\u201c zog sich die zweifach Grammy-pr\u00e4mierte K\u00fcnstlerin 2015 aus dem Musikbusiness zur\u00fcck \u2013 und war dennoch nie wirklich weg: Als Schauspielerin blieb sie mit starken Auftritten in bspw. RZAs Rap-Drama \u201eLove Beats Rhymes\u201c oder als Teil des Casts der Comic-Serie \u201eBlack Lightning\u201c stets im Ged\u00e4chtnis.<\/p>\n

Und dennoch klingt Scott auf \u201eTo Whom It May Concern\u201c wieder hungrig. Im Verlauf der 19 Songs zeigt sie alle Facetten ihrer Neo-Soul-Kunst. Nach dem selbstbewussten \u201eBe Great\u201c folgt die samtenene, den Spirit ihrer Community feiernde Ballade \u201eBeautiful People\u201c mit gleichzeitig liebevollen und dringlichen Kampfansagen: \u201eOur love is the art of war \/ Conquering all algorithms\u201c. In \u201eNorf Side\u201c rappt sie \u00fcber einen von DJ Premier beigesteuerten Boombap-Beat Seite an Seite mit der jungen Generation (in Form von Feature-MC Tierra Whack).<\/p>\n

\u201eBPOTY\u201c ist gnadenloser Funk aus der James-Brown-Schule, w\u00e4hrend der zur\u00fcckgelehnte Engtanz-Groove und Scotts beeindruckende Gesangsharmonien in \u201eThe Math\u201c angenehm die Armhaare aufstellen lassen. Und auch die Ausrei\u00dfer sind faszinierend, wie der schwarzhumorige Dixieland-Jazz von \u201ePay U On Tuesday\u201c oder der House-Banger \u201eRight Here Right Now\u201c. Das hier ist kein vorsichtiges Wiederherantasten an die Musik. Das ist nicht demure<\/em> und so gar nicht mindful<\/em> \u2013 das ist die triumphale R\u00fcckkehr einer Soul-Ikone!<\/p>\n
