Will Oldham, alias Bonnie „Prince“ Billy, ist ein umtriebiger Zeitgenosse. Seit fast 20 Jahren macht er unter wechselnden Pseudonymen Musik. Daneben spricht Oldham H\u00f6rb\u00fccher oder er spielt in Filmen mit. Vor allem in den letzten f\u00fcnf Jahren war er au\u00dferordentlich produktiv. Bei so viel Output besteht die Gefahr, sich in der Mittelm\u00e4\u00dfigkeit zu verlieren. Bei seinem neuen Album „Wolfroy Goes To Town“ ist dies keineswegs der Fall. <\/p>\n

F\u00fcr die Arbeit an „Wolfroy Goes To Town“ hat sich Will Oldham zur Unterst\u00fctzung die Musiker Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Shahzad Ismaily, Emmett Kelly, Danny Kiely und Angel Olsen ausgesucht. Sie haben geh\u00f6rigen Anteil am Gelingen des Albums. Trotzdem hat „Wolfroy Goes To Town“ seine besten Momente, wenn die mit br\u00fcchiger Stimme vorgetragenen, expliziten Lyrics von Will Oldham auf eine reduzierte Instrumentalisierung treffen. <\/p>\n

Unaufdringlich kommen die zehn Songs daher. Die Saiten werden gr\u00f6\u00dftenteils sorgsam gezupft, nicht w\u00fctend geschlagen. Nur selten weichen Oldham und Band von der ruhigen Grundstimmung ab, beispielsweise bei „New Tibet“. Aber auch hier finden sie schnell zur Ruhe zur\u00fcck. Allein die erste Single-Auskoppelung „Quail And Dumplings“ hebt sich in dieser Hinsicht vom restlichen Album ab: In dem countryesquen St\u00fcck finden die gelegentlichen Ausbr\u00fcche ihren H\u00f6hepunkt. Hier kommt auch S\u00e4ngerin Angel Olsen mit einem Solo-Part aus ihrer hinteren Ecke der Backing Vocals hervor. <\/p>\n

Die gr\u00f6\u00dfte St\u00e4rke Oldhams ist ohne Zweifel seine lyrische Brillanz und sein Talent als Erz\u00e4hler. Kaum ein anderer schafft es in \u00e4hnlich geschmeidiger Art und Weise, komplexe Metaphern neben infantile Reime zu stellen. Die dabei entstehenden \u00dcberraschungen bewirken beim H\u00f6rer immer wieder ein freudiges Schmunzeln. Besonders im Ohr bleibt da die Zeile: „Lover! Oh Lover, please buy me a beer and bring all your enemies here“.<\/p>\n

Manche seiner Texte sind optimistisch, andere nachdenklich oder entt\u00e4uscht. Gleich bei „No Match“ stellt Will Oldham klar, wer nicht zu ihm passt: L\u00fcgner, Leute, die aufgegeben haben oder den „Lord“ lieben. In „Cows“ fragt er sich, wer willkommen ist und wer nicht. Die Qualit\u00e4t des vielleicht besten Song „We Are Unhappy“ offenbart sich erst nach mehrmaligem H\u00f6ren: „Nothing is better, nothing is best, we are unhappy, we are unblessed“ beginnt das St\u00fcck. Das klingt traurig und resigniert, ist es aber nur bedingt. Denn letzten Endes sch\u00f6pft Oldham aus dem Zustand der Unzufriedenheit die n\u00f6tige Kraft, sich f\u00fcr Ver\u00e4nderungen stark zu machen. „There Will Be Spring“ hei\u00dft ein anderer Song. Der n\u00e4chste Fr\u00fchling kommt bestimmt, Herbst und Winter \u00fcberstehen wir aber gut mit einer Tasse Tee und „Wolfroy Goes To Town“. <\/p>\n
