Am 8. September w\u00e4re Patsy Cline 80 Jahre alt geworden. Mit gerade einmal 30 kam die S\u00e4ngerin bei einem Flugzeugabsturz ums Leben. Die Aufnahmen, mit denen Patsy Cline ber\u00fchmt wurde, umfassen eine Gesamtl\u00e4nge von nur zwei Stunden und zehn Minuten. Ihre Bedeutung f\u00fcr die Country-Musik ist unermesslich. An ihrem Leben und an ihren Aufnahmen l\u00e4sst sich die Entstehung der kommerziellen Country-Musik nachvollziehen.<\/p>\n

Geboren am 8. September 1932 als Virginia Patterson Hensley, schaffte Patsy Cline Anfang der 60er-Jahre den Sprung vom Country in die Pop-Charts. In den Anfangsjahren ihrer Karriere hatte sie fast nur Honky-Tonk-Songs und klassisches Country-Material gesungen. Als sie 1961 beim Label Decca unterschrieb, wurden Fiddle und Steel Guitar kurzerhand aus der Band geworfen. Stattdessen sollte Patsy Cline zu gef\u00e4lligen, jazzig-poppigen Arrangements mit Streichern und Klavier singen, befanden die Bosse bei Decca. Damals, in den fr\u00fchen 60er-Jahren, wurde Country Teil des kommerziellen Mainstreams und Patsy Cline einer der ersten Stars des sogenannten \u201eNashville-Sounds\u201c an der Schnittstelle zwischen Country und Pop. Mit dieser Rolle hatte sie selbst allerdings zun\u00e4chst gro\u00dfe Schwierigkeiten, denn Patsy Cline sah sich als traditionelle Country-S\u00e4ngerin. Das f\u00fchrte zu einigen Spannungen zwischen ihr und Owen Bradley, ihrem Produzenten beim Label Decca. Bradleys Bruder Harold erinnert sich: „Something that Owen did was make her slow down the songs, and she didn’t want to slow them down. When you slow them down, she would put a lot of feeling in there, but sometimes I thought she just had a lot of feeling because she was kind of mad at Owen.“ Die Songs, die sie f\u00fcr Decca aufnahm, waren Patsy Cline nicht nur zu poppig, sondern auch zu langsam. Vielleicht zwang sie das langsamere Tempo, gef\u00fchlvoller zu singen. Aber Harold Bradley vermutet, dass die Emotionen in Patsys Stimme damals eher daher r\u00fchrten, dass sie sauer auf ihren Produzenten war. Doch der Erfolg gab Owen Bradley Recht. Gleich die zweite Single, die er mit Patsy Cline aufnahm, wurde 1962 ihr gr\u00f6\u00dfter Hit: \u201eCrazy\u201c, geschrieben vom damals noch unbekannten Willie Nelson. Nur ein einziges Mal soll Patsy Cline den Song eingesungen haben. Ein \u201eFirst Take\u201c also und die Aufnahme war im Kasten.<\/p>\n

Patsy Cline war aber nicht nur eine gro\u00dfe S\u00e4ngerin, sie trat auch als starke und selbstbewusste Frau auf, die ihre Karriere selbst kontrollieren wollte. Daf\u00fcr dass sie sich in der von M\u00e4nnern dominierten Country-Welt in Nashville zu behaupten wusste, wird Patsy Cline noch heute von K\u00fcnstlerinnen wie etwa Cat Power sehr gesch\u00e4tzt. Ihre Gagen lie\u00df sie sich vor Konzertbeginn auszahlen. \u201eNo dough, no show\u201c lautete ihr Motto: „Ohne Geld kein Auftritt“. Von sich selbst sprach Patsy Cline als \u201eThe Cline\u201c, Menschen in ihrem Umfeld, M\u00e4nner wie Frauen, nannte sie liebevoll \u201eHoss\u201c.<\/p>\n

Patsy Cline galt als Dickkopf. Nach einem Konzert in Kansas City bestand sie trotz schlechter Wetterbedingungen darauf, mit dem Flugzeug zur\u00fcck nach Nashville zu reisen. Einer der letzten Menschen, mit dem sie kurz vor Abflug sprach, war ihre Kollegin, die S\u00e4ngerin Dottie West: \u201eIt was really a bad, foggy rain. And the last thing I said to Patsy was: I’m really gonna be worried about you flying in this weather. She said: Don’t worry ‚bout me, Hoss, when it’s my time to go, it’s my time.\u201c \u201eMach Dir keine Sorgen um mich\u201c, hatte Patsy Cline zu Dottie West gesagt, \u201ewenn meine Zeit gekommen ist, dann ist das eben so.\u201c Am 5. M\u00e4rz 1963 raste ihr Privatflugzeug bei schlechter Sicht und str\u00f6mendem Regen in einen H\u00fcgel, 140 Kilometer vor Nashville. Alle Insassen kamen ums Leben.<\/p>\n
