Am 07. Dezember 1942 wurde Harry Chapin in New York City geboren. Von Long Island aus versuchte er die Welt \u2013 oder eher Amerika \u2013 ein St\u00fcck weit besser zu machen.<\/p>\n

Obwohl er nur 39 Jahre alt wurde (Chapin starb 1981 an den Folgen einer Herzattacke w\u00e4hrend des Autofahrens) ver\u00f6ffentlichte Harry Chapin ganze 12 Alben. Diese F\u00fclle ergab sich aus einer Streitigkeit zwischen den Labels Elektra Records und Columbia. Der Hintergrund: Das erste Album, das Harry mit seinen Br\u00fcdern Tom und Steve herausgebracht hatte, hatte nur m\u00e4\u00dfigen Erfolg. Daraufhin wechselte Harry zu Elektra und nahm 1972 dort sein Album „Heads And Tails“ auf. Die Single „Taxi“ schaffte es in den US-Charts immerhin auf Platz 24, und schon bald versuchte Columbia Records, den Musiker abzuwerben. Der Deal, den sich Elektra letztendlich f\u00fcr Harry Chapin ausdachte, war ein Novum im Musikbusiness. Weil das Label mit den finanziellen Angeboten der Konkurrenz nicht mithalten konnte, boten sie Chapin gratis Studiozeit \u2013 f\u00fcr einen neun-Alben-Vertag ein betr\u00e4chtlicher Wert. Das Ergebnis: In nur sieben Jahren erf\u00fcllte der „American Troubadour“ sein Vertragssoll.<\/p>\n

Nur zwei Jahre nach seinem Durchbruch mit „Heads And Tails“ nahm Harry Chapin sein viertes Album f\u00fcr Elektra auf: „Verities & Balderdash“ wurde Chapins erfolgreichstes Album. Wieso? Nun, es enthielt den Hit „Cat’s In The Cradle“. Der Song machte den damals 32-j\u00e4hrigen ber\u00fchmt und reich.<\/p>\n

Aber Chapin glaubte nicht an pers\u00f6nlichen Reichtum: Er setzte sein Geld f\u00fcr wohlt\u00e4tige Zwecke ein, unter anderem, um den Welthunger zu bek\u00e4mpfen. Er begr\u00fcndete das „World Hunger Year“ und „Long Island Cares“, unterst\u00fctzte ein weiteres Dutzend Organisationen. Heute k\u00fcmmern sich seine Witwe Sandra und seine S\u00f6hne Josh und Jason in der „The Harry Chapin Foundation“ um das Verm\u00e4chtnis des Altruisten. Harry Chapin w\u00e4re heute 70 Jahre alt geworden.<\/p>\n
