Anna Calvi<\/a>, die Britin mit der durchdringenden, dunklen Stimme und den sinnlich schwarz geschminkten Augen ver\u00f6ffentlicht diese Woche mit „One Breath“ ihr zweites Studioalbum, das eine ganze L\u00e4nge pers\u00f6nlicher ist, als das f\u00fcr den Mercury Price und die Brit Award nominierte Deb\u00fct der Musikerin. In London geboren, kam Calvi durch ihren Vater schon fr\u00fch mit Musik in Ber\u00fchrung und gab schlie\u00dflich in letzter Minute dem Musikstudium Vorrang \u00fcber ein anfangs angestrebtes Kunststudium. An der Uni begann sie auch ihren Gesang zu schulen. Man mag es, wenn man sie auf der B\u00fchne erlebt, gar nicht vermuten, aber f\u00fcr die sch\u00fcchterne Anna Calvi war das Singen zu Anfang eine gro\u00dfe \u00dcberwindung.<\/p>\n

Auf „One Breath“ h\u00f6rt man nichts von dieser angeblichen Sch\u00fcchternheit. Selbstbewusst und durchdringend singt Calvi die emotionalen und intimen Texte. So zum Beispiel beim einleitenden „Suddenly“, in dem sie ihren Kampf mit der Depression verarbeitet und ihre Stimme im Refrain stetig st\u00e4rker und kr\u00e4ftiger wird. Der Text der ersten Singleauskopplung „Eliza“ wiederum handelt von Selbstzweifel und vom Streben nach Attributen einer anderen, selbstbewussten Frau. Musikalisch ist der Song mit treibenden Schlagzeug- und Gitarrenkl\u00e4ngen untermalt, die entfernt an Flamenco-Rhytmen erinnern. „Piece By Piece“ ist experimenteller: Hier stehen Geige und Rhythmus im Vordergrund, der fast gehauchte Gesang passt sich der Soundcollage an. Zwischendurch f\u00e4hrt Calvis Gitarre durch den Song und durchrei\u00dft die Harmonie. Besonders bei diesem Lied wird klar, wie gut Anna Calvi es beherrscht, ihre Songs so klingen zu lassen, als h\u00e4tte sie ein komplettes Orchester im Hintergrund.<\/p>\n

„Cry“, „Sing To Me“ und „Tristan“ sind mit dem schon vom Deb\u00fctalbum gewohnten Pathos ausgestattet und haben diesen d\u00fcster-romantischen Anklang, den Calvi mit ihrer Stimme so gut verk\u00f6rpert. „One Breath“ beginnt mit einem Fl\u00fcstern und steigert sich kontinuierlich, geht dann in den Song „Love Of My Life“ \u00fcber, welcher sich wohl am deutlichsten vom Rest des Albums unterscheidet. Stark verzerrte Gitarre und Gesang dominieren hier. Die letzten drei Tracks „Carry Me Over“, „Bleed Into Me“ und „The Bridge“ sind wieder ruhiger und mit theatraler Romantik gespickt.<\/p>\n

„One Breath“ wurde in Franreich von John Congleton produziert, der schon mit Acts wie Bill Callahan, John Grant, Erykah Baduh, Modest Mouse und Amanda Palmer zusammenarbeitete, und ist ein wunderbar emotionales Album mit dem f\u00fcr Anna Calvi typischen Sound und einem Funken Experimentierfreude. Calvi kreiert ohne viele Effekte, teilweise nur mit Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Gesang, eine theatrale Atmosph\u00e4re, passend zu ihren intimen, gef\u00fchlvollen Texten.<\/p>\n
