„If they\u2019ve seen it all, show \u2019em something new.“<\/em> The Afghan Whigs sind zur\u00fcck. 16 Jahre nach ihrem letzten Studioalbum „1965“ ver\u00f6ffentlichen die Musiker um Leads\u00e4nger Greg Dulli das neue Werk „Do To The Beast“. In den fr\u00fchen 90ern waren The Afghan Whigs eine der meist gesch\u00e4tzten und angesehenen Alternative-Rock-Bands, nicht zuletzt dank ihrer ungew\u00f6hnlichen Genre-Mischung aus Hard Rock, Post-Punk und Soul.<\/p>\n

1986 treffen Dulli, Leadgitarrist Rick McCollum, Bassist John Curley und der Schlagzeuger Steve Earle zum ersten Mal in Cincinnati, Ohio, aufeinander und nennen sich fortan The Afghan Whigs. Zwei Jahre sp\u00e4ter erscheint das Deb\u00fctalbum „Big Top Halloween“ auf dem eigens gegr\u00fcndeten Label Ultrasuede. Im Jahr darauf kommen die vier Jungs bei Sub Pop unter Vertrag. Das hochgelobte „Gentlemen“ wird 1993 ver\u00f6ffentlicht, Album Nummer f\u00fcnf, „Black Love“, erscheint 1996. Drei Jahre nach Erscheinen ihrer LP „1965“ \u00fcber Columbia Records geben The Afghan Whigs 2001 ihre Trennung bekannt: Grund daf\u00fcr sei die r\u00e4umliche Distanz sowie die famili\u00e4ren Verpflichtungen der einzelnen Mitglieder, die eine Weiterarbeit unm\u00f6glich machten.<\/p>\n

Und trotz wiederholter Aussagen von Greg Dulli, dass eine Wiedervereinigung ausgeschlossen sei, kommen The Afghan Whigs 2006 nochmals im Studio zusammen, um zwei neue Songs f\u00fcr eine Best-of-Compilation aufzunehmen. Auch 2012 werden Hoffnungen geweckt, als die Band eine Reunion-Tour absolviert. Doch der eigentliche Ausl\u00f6ser f\u00fcr neue Studio-Sessions und somit auch das erste Album seit 16 Jahren ist ein Auftritt mit Usher beim SXSW-Festival 2013, nachdem die Reunion-Tour schon l\u00e4ngst einen Abschluss gefunden hat. In einem Interview mit dem Rolling Stone schw\u00e4rmt Dulli von der aufsehenerregenden Zusammenarbeit: „Usher, along with Mark Lanegan and Bj\u00f6rk, is one of the three best singers I\u2019ve ever seen sing up close. He can do things with his voice that are just effortless. I\u2019ve listened to Michael Jackson my whole life, and Usher has that Michael thing. It was thrilling.“<\/p>\n

Nach diesem Wendepunkt beginnen die Aufnahmen zum siebten Album „Do To The Beast“. Dieses ist gleichzeitig das erste Werk ohne Gitarrist Rick McCollum. Stattdessen gibt es viele Gastmusiker, die dem Album eine Menge Abwechslung und Vielfalt einhauchen: Soul-Musiker Van Hunt, Mark McGuire vom Electro-Trio Emeralds, Johnny „Natural“ Najera – der musikalische Leiter von Usher – sowie viele weitere talentierte K\u00fcnstler. <\/p>\n

Der Opener des Albums, „Parked Outside“, ist einer der h\u00e4rtesten Rock-Songs, der jemals von The Afghan Whigs geschrieben wurde und Dulli laut eigener Aussage an einen „Stripper-Song“ erinnert. Eine Spaghetti-Western-Atmosph\u00e4re schwingt bei der ersten Single „Algiers“ mit, die sich ebenfalls in Form des Musikvideos widerspiegelt. „Lost In The Woods“ ist Dullis pers\u00f6nlicher Favorit der Platte: Der Song sei wie eine f\u00fcnfmin\u00fctige Reise durch die Nachbarsviertel seines Verstandes. Dasselbe Tempo und dieselben Akkorde, aber v\u00f6llig verschiedene Stimmungen \u2013 diese musikalische Raffinesse erschaffen die Musiker mit den aufeinanderfolgenden Tracks „Royal Cream“ und „I Am Fire“. <\/p>\n
