Rick James, „King Of Punk Funk“, laut eigener Aussage „one of the baddest and best looking mother-fuckers of all time“, aber auch verurteilter Straft\u00e4ter, starb vor zehn Jahren an Herzversagen.<\/p>\n

Rick James wurde am 1. Februar 1948 als James Ambrose Johnson Junior in Buffalo, New York, geboren. Fr\u00fch unangepasst, brach er die Schule ab und ging zur Navy, bei der er allerdings schon nach kurzer Zeit Fahnenflucht beging und nach Toronto, Kanada, floh. James traf dort auf die sp\u00e4teren Buffalo-Springfield-Mitglieder Neil Young und Bruce Palmer, mit denen er die R&B-Band The Mynah Birds gr\u00fcndete. Die Band erarbeitete sich 1966 ein Signing auf Motown. Die Pl\u00e4ne zu einem Album wurden jedoch dadurch durchkreuzt, dass der fahnenfl\u00fcchtige James verhaftet und zu einer einj\u00e4hrigen Haftstrafe verurteilt wurde.<\/p>\n

Nach seiner Freilassung hatte James verschiedene Bandprojekte, richtiger Erfolg stellte sich jedoch erst mit seinem ersten Soloalbum „Come Get It!“ von 1978 mit den zwei Chart-Hits „You And I“<\/a> sowie „Mary Jane“<\/a> ein. Ab diesem Moment sollte es eine l\u00e4ngere Zeit stetig bergauf f\u00fcr Rick James gehen, bis 1980 hatte er schon vier Alben ver\u00f6ffentlicht. <\/p>\n

Darunter war auch „Street Songs“, das erste Album, in dem James seinem funkgetr\u00e4nkten R&B Rock- und New-Wave-Elemente beimischte. „Street Songs“, vor allem die Hit-Single „Super Freak“<\/a>, begr\u00fcndeten James\u2019 Ruf als „King Of Punk Funk“. Das Album von 1981 markierte auch James endg\u00fcltigen Durchbruch als K\u00fcnstler, er wurde f\u00fcr den Grammy nominiert und „Street Songs“ erreichte Platz 1 der R&B-Charts.<\/p>\n

In dieser Zeit waren Rick James und Motown quasi unzertrennlich. James war nicht nur als Solok\u00fcnstler aktiv, sondern produzierte auch flei\u00dfig Hits f\u00fcr andere K\u00fcnstler des Labels. „Standing On The Top“, die Reunion-Single der legend\u00e4ren The Temptations wurde ebenso von James produziert wie das Deb\u00fctalbum der „Ivory Queen Of Soul“ Teena Maria.<\/p>\n

In den 1990ern dann der krasse, aber nicht unerwartete Bruch: James musste drei Jahre ins Gef\u00e4ngnis, er hatte unter Drogeneinfluss mit seiner Freundin zwei Frauen schwer misshandelt. James war schwer kokainabh\u00e4ngig und hatte laut eigenen Aussagen zeitweise 7000 Dollar pro Woche f\u00fcr die Droge ausgegeben. Mit seinem letzten Album vor seinem Tod, „Urban Rapsody“ von 1997, konnte er nicht mehr an fr\u00fchere Erfolge ankn\u00fcpfen.<\/p>\n
