Archie Bell wurde am 1. September 1944 in Henderson, Texas in eine gro\u00dfe Familie geboren. Er und seine sechs Br\u00fcder wurden von seiner Mutter jedes Wochenende in die Kirche gebracht. Hier schloss sich Archie dem Chor an. Archie Bell & The Drells gr\u00fcndete er als Teenager, zusammen mit seinen Freunden Billy Butler, James Wise und Willie Parnell.<\/p>\n

Sie traten bei vielen Talentwettbewerben in und rund um Houston auf und gewannen die meisten. Skipper Lee Frazier, ein Radio-DJ und Manager, entdeckte die vier und nahm sie unter seine Fittiche. Er machte die Drells mit der TSU Tornadoes Band bekannt. Gemeinsam nahmen sie „Tighten Up“ auf. Das St\u00fcck wurde ein Hit, der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Hit f\u00fcr Archie Bell & The Drells. „Tighten Up“ f\u00fchrte 1968 sowohl die Pop- als auch die R’n’B-Charts an und verkaufte sich mehrere Millionen mal.<\/p>\n

Archie Bell jedoch war gar nicht in den Staaten um den Erfolg zu genie\u00dfen. Der S\u00e4nger wurde kurz vor Release der Single als Soldat eingezogen und in Deutschland stationiert. Die Drells traten derweil mit anderen Frontm\u00e4nnern auf. Doch Bell konnte bald wieder zur\u00fcck. Es folgten beliebte R’n’B-Platten wie „I Can’t Stop Dancing“ und „There’s Gonna Be A Showdown“. In den 70ern wendeten sich Archie Bell & The Drells Funk und Disco zu.<\/p>\n

Die Gruppe l\u00f6ste sich 1980 auf, daraufhin brachte Bell eine Soloplatte heraus. Seit den 80ern steht er mit The Drells in unterschiedlichen Besetzungen auf der B\u00fchne.<\/p>\n
