Darkstar – \u201eFoam Island\u201c (Warp)<\/h6>\n

Dunkle Zeiten, davon gab es viele in England. Eine Phase, deren popkulturelle Aufarbeitung immer noch nachwirkt, sind die 80er-Jahre. Die Zeit, in der die konservative Margaret Thatcher regierte, in der die Arbeitslosigkeit stieg und die Sozialleistungen sanken. Manch einer mag sagen, dass das rebellische Feuer, dass die eiserne Lady in britischen Musikszenen provozierte, das einzig Gute an ihr war. Der Spirit dieser Zeit findet sich zum Beispiel im d\u00fcsteren \u201eGhost Town\u201c von The Specials, \u201eStand Down Margaret\u201c von The Beat und einigen St\u00fccken von Sham 69, The Clash, The Jam.<\/p>\n

Zu einer \u00e4hnlichen fragw\u00fcrdigen Popularit\u00e4t k\u00f6nnte es der amtierende Prime Minister David Cameron schaffen. Funken schlagen zum Beispiel aus Richtung Sleaford Mods. Das Duo Darkstar setzt die Thematik nun in eine ganz andere Atmosph\u00e4re, Eckpunkte R&B und Electronica. Die beiden kommen aus Nordengland, dem britischen Pott, einer Gegend, die von Thatchers Politik besonders gebeutelt wurde. Auf Besuchen im letzten Jahr stellten Aiden Whalley und James Young fest, dass sich die Stimmung in ihrer Heimat ge\u00e4ndert hatte. Trostloser, h\u00e4rter, grauer wurde es.<\/p>\n

So kamen sie auf die Idee, sich mit jungen Menschen aus der Region zu unterhalten. Und diese O-T\u00f6ne spiegeln mehr Facetten wieder als Ver\u00e4rgerung und Desillusionierung. Aus den Soundschnipseln, die jeden Track auf \u201eFoam Island\u201c mitbestimmen, dringen Hoffnung und Ambitionen hervor. Eingebettet sind die Interviewausschnitte in ein Klanggewebe aus k\u00fchlen Drum Machines, Ambient-Fl\u00e4chen und eing\u00e4ngigen Synthies. Das m\u00fcndet dann mal in poppige Tracks wie das pluckernde \u201eGo Natural\u201c und das l\u00e4ssig dahinflie\u00dfende \u201eFoam Island\u201c. Fl\u00e4chige, soundtrackeske Abwechslung bieten \u201eTilly\u2019s Theme\u201c und \u201eA Different Kind Of Struggle\u201c, das sich aus Stimmengewirr speist. F\u00fcr die Tanzfl\u00e4che ist auch was dabei, zum Beispiel der m\u00e4andernde Track \u201eStoke The Fire\u201c.<\/p>\n

\u201eFoam Island\u201c ist weder klassisches Album noch 12″-Dancetrack-Compilation. Aiden Whalley und James Young haben ein neues Genre aufgemacht, Oral History trifft auf einen popgeschulten, elektronischen Sound. Und das Konzept geht fabelhaft auf.<\/p>\n
