Ihre ersten Alben haben sie mit Cover-Songs von Acts wie Gang Starr, Nas und Kanye West gespickt. Voll konsequent war da \u201eSour Soul\u201c: Ihr letztes Album nahmen die kanadischen Profi-Jazzer, die sich einst an der Musikhochschule kennenlernten, zusammen mit Ghostface Killah auf. Daf\u00fcr brachten BadBadNotGood ihre vielschichtigen Jams in Formen, die die Raps von Killah und anderen, zum Beispiel Danny Brown, einnehmend und akzentuiert begleiteten.<\/p>\n<p>Mit diesem Ansatz bricht \u201eIV\u201c wieder. Mit dem Titel ihres neuen Albums stellen BadBadNotGood dann auch klar, dass \u201eSour Soul\u201c eine besondere Nummer war, denn eigentlich handelt es sich hier um ihre f\u00fcnfte Platte. Und der fehlt gl\u00fccklicherweise der Rap-Track auch nicht. In \u201eHyssop Of Love\u201c breitet sich der schlingernde, tiefe Flow von Mick Jenkins \u00fcber ein zur\u00fcckhaltendes Arrangement aus Synths und Gitarre aus. Funky, verschlungen und bet\u00f6rend klingt das.<\/p>\n<p>Mit dem anschlie\u00dfenden \u201eStructure No. 3\u201c f\u00fchren BadBadNotGood das gleiche Thema fort, aufgelockert vom Kontrabass, der pl\u00f6tzliche Tempowechsel antreibt. V\u00f6llig smooth gehen die Musiker von eing\u00e4ngigen Songstrukturen in rhythmisch-komplexe, freie St\u00fccke \u00fcber und zur\u00fcck. So auch beim Saxofon-Duett \u201eConfessions Pt. II\u201c, bei dem Gast Colin Stetson und Leland Whitty, langj\u00e4hriger Begleiter der Kanadier und jetzt festes Bandmitglied, schmutzige gegen samtige Melodie k\u00e4mpfen lassen.<\/p>\n<p>Eine hervorstechende Kollaboration ist auch \u201eLavender\u201c \u2013 zusammen mit Produzent Kaytranada legen BadBadNotGood ein schw\u00fcles Disco-Funk-St\u00fcck hin. \u00dcberhaupt \u2013 auf \u201eIV\u201c hat die Band sich etwas mehr in der Studiotechnik ausgetobt. Vibrafon und ein CS-60 von Yamaha schaffen gl\u00e4nzende Synthesizer-Sounds. Das Schlagzeug wird bei manchen Tracks durch eine Drum Machine verst\u00e4rkt, zum Beispiel im variationsreichen Opener \u201eAnd That, Too.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Nicht \u00fcberraschend, dass BadBadNotGood mit \u201eIV\u201c wieder eine dichte, \u00e4u\u00dferst komplexe Platte eingespielt haben. Beeindruckend aber, dass man kein Mal beim H\u00f6ren an Muckertum denkt.
