Was ein Ausbruch kurz nach Anbruch der zweiten Minute von \u201eMe And Your Mama\u201c! In diesem Moment stellt Childish Gambino klar, dass uns mit \u201eAwaken, My Love!\u201c keine sanftes Programm erwartet, keine wohligweiche Funk- und Pop-Aff\u00e4re. H\u00e4tte man nach den ersten zwei glitzernden Synth-Minuten schon denken k\u00f6nnen. In jedem Fall bricht Childish Gambino mit Erwartungen. F\u00fcr sein letztes Album \u201eBecause The Internet\u201c war er noch in der Kategorie \u201eRap\u201c f\u00fcr einen Grammy nominiert, jetzt gibt er dem ekstatischen Funk von George Clintons Funkadelic-Kollektiv und dem psychedelischen Soul von Bootsy Collins ein Makeover.<\/p>\n

Die Z\u00e4sur im Opener von \u201eAwaken, My Love!\u201c ist eine den Track zerberstende Gitarre, gefolgt vom markersch\u00fctternden Predigen und Betteln von Childish Gambino. Noch mehr Wucht bringt ein Chor in das Ganze, der hier auch von der Apokalypse k\u00fcnden k\u00f6nnte, so ernst und gleichzeitig gef\u00fchlvoll klingt er. Auch dem Song \u201eHave Some Love\u201c, der in einem spacigen Jam von Stimmsamples, Synthesizer und Percussion in die H\u00f6he geht, gibt der Chor in Sly-And-The-Family-Stone-Manier seine Bodenhaftung zur\u00fcck. Und die Stimme von Childish Gambino macht ihre ganz eigenen Trips.<\/p>\n

Sie jauchzt, sie schreit, sie verzehrt sich. Beim Song \u201eRedbone\u201c bleibt es schwer zu glauben, dass hier wirklich Childish Gambino am Mikrofon steht, und nicht etwa Patti LaBelle. Sein Falsetto gesellt sich in dem Song zu einer bescheidenen, groovenden Bassline, und zerflie\u00dft an manchen Stellen fast. Ein schwer tanzbarer Slowjam ist das. Hier gleiten F\u00fc\u00dfe hinweg, hier gehen Herzen auf. Und auch trippige Stimmungen werden auf der Platte bedient: tiefe B\u00e4sse, Synthie-Melodien wie Sternenhimmel und der wandelvolle Gesang auf \u201eTerrified\u201c lassen einen geradewegs ins Weltall driften.<\/p>\n

Childish Gambino zeigt mit \u201eAwaken, My Love!\u201c, was eigentlich schon bekannt ist: Dieser Typ ist mit vielen Wassern gewaschen, er kann sich in alle H\u00fcllen kleiden \u2013 in einem anderen Leben ist er als Donald Glover ein ausgezeichneter Schauspieler. Und \u201eAwaken, My Love!\u201c atmet 70er-Nostalgie, aber die Songs haben Seele. Wenn Glover hier kreischt, leidet, vergibt und entz\u00fcckt, klingt das nach vielem, aber nicht nach Kunstkniff.<\/p>\n
