Aktive Bands und K\u00fcnstler aus Deutschland, abgesehen von Rammstein, die auch international erfolgreich sind, kann man vermutlich an einer Hand abz\u00e4hlen. Roosevelt mit seinem Indie-Elektro-Soul ist so ein Fall aus j\u00fcngerer Zeit. Dennoch kann einen das Gef\u00fchl beschleichen, dass sowohl Labels als auch Pop-Journalisten st\u00e4ndig auf der Suche nach potenziellen Exportschlagern sind. Es gibt ja auch genug deutsche Bands, die englischsprachige Musik machen, da wird doch etwas mit Appeal f\u00fcr ein europ\u00e4isches, britisches oder US-amerikanisches Publikum dabei sein. Schwierig ist die Antwort auf Fragen nach einem internationalen Sound. Was ist das eigentlich und wie kann ein K\u00fcnstler, eine K\u00fcnstlerin diesen Sound finden? Diese Fragen werden wir in diesem Text zwar nicht beantworten, dennoch bilden sie einen interessanten Hintergrund: englischsprachige Popmusik aus Deutschland und der Versuch, internationalen Erfolg zu kreieren. <\/p>\n

Auf seine Art ist Levin Stadler alias Levin Goes Lightly aus Stuttgart so ein Versuch, verwebt er doch auf seinem am 28. April 2017 bei Staatsakt erscheinenden Album \u201eGA PS\u201c geschickt die momentan angesagten Einfl\u00fcsse aus 1980er-Zitat und modern-technoider Elektronik. Wobei Zitat noch stark untertrieben ist. Wir h\u00f6ren Wave-Synths, viel digitalen Hall, volle B\u00e4sse, pr\u00e4sente Drums. Die Produktion ist aufger\u00e4umt und klingt sehr gut. Mit Lo-Fi, wie auf Levins Facebook-Seite beschrieben, hat \u201eGA PS\u201c nichts zu tun. Hinzu kommt eine Stimme, die tats\u00e4chlich an die Sonorit\u00e4t von Ian Curtis, den sp\u00e4teren Dirk von Lowtzow oder Yan Scott Wilkinson von British Sea Power erinnert. Trotz der Aufger\u00e4umtheit wabern die Synths durchs Stereobild und die Drummachine pluckert und knistert manchmal weit hinten im Raum (\u201eStars\u201c). Andernorts ist der Beat geradlinig und bildet ein Fundament (\u201eBluescreen\u201c). Bei den Vocals dringen T-Laute \u00f6fter unangenehm durch den Mix. Gerade durch das in sich geschlossene Klanggewand aus Pailletten, Schulterpolstern und sonstigen 1980er-Retro-Features klingt Levin Goes Lightly auf \u201eGA PS\u201c sehr stimmig und trotzdem nicht, als ob man krampfhaft versucht h\u00e4tte, einen solchen Sound zu erzeugen. <\/p>\n

Textlich ist der aus dem Umfeld der Post-Punk-Band Die Nerven stammende Musiker schwer zu fassen. Thematisch ist das Album eine eher traurige Angelegenheit. W\u00fcrde man bei jedem \u201eSadness\u201c einen Schnaps trinken, man w\u00e4re nach den zehn Songs auf \u201eGA PS\u201c ziemlich betrunken. Die Lyrics bewegen sich zwischen wunderbar trockener Flirtanleitung im Opener \u201eSomeone\u2019s Favorite\u201c und Trioesker Parole, zum Beispiel bei \u201e7:30\u201c (\u201eHalf past seven, the alarm clock\u201c). Das Englisch und die meisten Texte sind einfach gestrickt. W\u00e4hrend Levin in seiner Selbstreflexion eher belanglos bleibt, wird es in Songs wie \u201eCotton\u201c oder \u201eO\u2019Neill\u201c interessanter. Dennoch bleibt das Gef\u00fchl, dass die Texte nicht sonderlich wichtig sind. <\/p>\n

In Sachen Persona hat Levin Goes Lightly internationales Format. Er ist eine stark geschminkte Kunstfigur, ein k\u00fchles Abstraktum, ein Gesicht von zeitlos-sch\u00f6ner Unnahbarkeit. Seine Musik und seine Erscheinung haben das Potenzial, Ohren und Blicke auf sich zu ziehen. Ein Potenzial, das durchaus zu internationalem Format reichen k\u00f6nnte. Dar\u00fcber hinaus ist \u201eGA PS\u201c allerdings nicht sonderlich spannend geraten. Man kann das Album als Ganzes gut h\u00f6ren, einzelne St\u00fccke ragen kaum heraus. <\/p>\n
