Abgr\u00fcndige Gedanken. Mit eben jenen meldet sich Jonathan Pierce von The Drums zur\u00fcck. Das letzte verbleibende Mitglied der Ostk\u00fcsten-Surf-Band vertont auf dem neuen Longplayer Herzschmerz mit einer Dunkelheit, die man von The Drums eigentlich kennt, aber so dennoch nie erwartet h\u00e4tte.<\/p>\n

Auch wenn viele bei den ersten Gedanken an The Drums sofort damit beginnen, im Hinterhirn \u201eLet\u2019s Go Surfing\u201c<\/a> zu summen, wandelte die Band zumindest lyrisch seit der Gr\u00fcndung auf d\u00fcsteren Pfaden und nicht nur auf den sandigen Wegen zwischen VW-Bulli und Meeresbrandung. Bereits \u201eBest Friend\u201c<\/a> aus dem Jahr 2010, besticht neben den gewohnt sonnengetr\u00e4nkten Gitarrenriffs mit Zeilen wie: \u201eYou are my best friend, and then you died\u201c. Harter Tobak f\u00fcr ein sorgenfreies Leben hinterm Instagram-Filter.<\/p>\n

Ein ebenso lebensverneinender Tenor zieht sich auch stringent durch \u201eAbysmal Thoughts\u201c, was auf die Einsamkeit von Jonathan Pierce zur\u00fcckzuf\u00fchren sein k\u00f6nnte. Erst sorgen Unstimmigkeiten daf\u00fcr, dass aus einem Quartett ein Soloprojekt wird und dann macht auch noch sein Freund Schluss. Life sucks, you know. Bereits der Opener \u201eMirror\u201c setzt die Stimmung und beginnt mit einer wehm\u00fctigen Zeile, die Pierce gebetsartig wiederholt: \u201eI look in the mirror when the sun goes down. I ask myself, who are you now?\u201c. Da bleibt dem Surfer-Boy das Zahnpastalachen glatt im Halse stecken.<\/p>\n

Zum Gl\u00fcck reden wir hier nur von den Texten, denn musikalisch klingen The Drums fast haargenau so, wie sie es eigentlich schon immer taten. Jingle-Jangle-Gitarren und viel Twang machen Lust darauf, mit Marty McFly durch Hill Valley zu streunern und Milkshakes zu trinken. <\/p>\n

Eben jener Spagat zwischen 50er-Surfpop, 80er-Indiepop und 2017er-Melancholie zieht sich durch das komplette Album, das sich im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorg\u00e4ngern deutlich st\u00e4rker in Richtung New Wave orientiert und mit \u201eBlood Under My Belt\u201c und \u201eHeart Basel\u201c sogar \u00fcber lupenreine The-Smiths- bzw. The-Cure-Zitate verf\u00fcgt. Das macht \u201eAbysmal Thoughts\u201c musikalisch sicher nicht zu einem wegweisenden Album – f\u00fcr einen gr\u00fcblerischen Tag am Nordseestrand liefert es dennoch den passenden Soundtrack. <\/p>\n
