\u201eGezeugt an hawaiianischen Morgen. Geschrieben an einem sonnendurchfluteten Schlafzimmer-Nachmittag in Los Angeles. Geprobt in der kalifornischen D\u00e4mmerung. Geschlafen unter dem Himmel von Big Sur\u201c – so beschreibt der US-amerikanische Musiker David Portner alias Avey Tare den Entstehungsprozess seines neuen Albums \u201eEucalyptus\u201c. Esoterische Seltsamkeit ist nichts neues f\u00fcr Portner, schlie\u00dflich ist seine Hauptband Animal Collective eine dieser Bands, die abstrakte Psychedelia und surreale Sounds mit eing\u00e4ngiger Popmusik verbinden kann. Seit 2010 ver\u00f6ffentlicht der Gitarrist und S\u00e4nger aus Baltimore unabh\u00e4ngig von seiner Band Soloalben. Doch \u201eEucalyptus\u201c hat nicht viel mit dem Weirdo-Indie-Rock von Avey Tare\u2018s Slasher Flicks<\/a> zu tun. Es ist ein verletzliches, chaotisches Psych-Folk-Album geworden. <\/p>\n

Songs wie der Opener \u201eSeason High\u201c und \u201eMs. Secret\u201c lassen sich in ihrer folkigen Intimit\u00e4t mit der Musik von Devendra Banhart vergleichen. In letzterem darf sogar die Avantgarde-Pedal-Steel-Gitarristin Susan Alcorn das Klangbild mit Country-Impressionen anreichern \u2013 so US-amerikanisch hat Tare noch nie geklungen. \u201eMelody Unfair\u201c, der zweite Song des Albums, erinnert mit seiner Kombination aus sanft getreichelter Akustikgitarre und surreal verzerrten Samples mehr an \u201eSpirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished\u201c \u2013 das gleicherma\u00dfen kindlich verspielte wie albtraumhafte Animal-Collective-Deb\u00fct. Tare schafft es hier, sich mit abstrakten, psychedelische Sounds direkt ins Unterbewusstsein einzugraben \u2013 und zeigt sich dabei so verwundbar wie seit 17 Jahren nicht mehr. <\/p>\n

Leider schafft er es nicht, den brillanten Fokus dieser ersten drei Songs \u00fcber die Spanne des 15 Songs und 62 Minuten Laufzeit langen Albums zu halten: St\u00fccke wie die Collagen \u201eLunch Out Of Order Pt. 1\u201c und \u201eLunch Out Of Order Pt. 2\u201c oder das viel zu lange \u201eCoral Lords\u201c verlieren sich in elektro-akustischer Seltsamkeit, w\u00e4hrend die eing\u00e4ngigeren Songs wie \u201eJackson 5\u201c wie krampfhafte Versuche wirken, diese Seltsamkeit mit den gro\u00dfen Pop-Hooks des Hit-Albums \u201eMerryweather Post Pavillon\u201c zu verkn\u00fcpfen.<\/p>\n

Diese H\u00f6hen und Tiefen machen \u201eEucalyptus\u201c leider zu einem frustrierenden Album. Immer wenn Tare den H\u00f6rer erfolgreich in seinen hawaiianischen Morgen oder seine kalifornischen D\u00e4mmerung versetzt, rei\u00dft die n\u00e4chste zu exzessive Collage oder der n\u00e4chste inkonsequente Song einen wieder auf den Boden der Tatsachen zur\u00fcck. Was wie ein organischer Tageszyklus wirken soll, f\u00fchlt sich zu oft wie ein wirrer Fieber-Traum an.<\/p>\n
