Er war eine der gro\u00dfen Hintergrundgestalten der Musikgeschichte: Allen Touissant, einer der einflussreichsten Komponisten seiner Zeit \u2013 der jedoch sein ganzes Leben im Schatten anderer K\u00fcnstlerinnen und K\u00fcnstler verbrachte. Der Songwriter, Produzent und Pianist aus New Orleans steckte hinter unz\u00e4hligen Hit-Songs aus unterschiedlichsten Genres, von Jazz \u00fcber Soul und Rock bis zu Mainstream-Pop. Am 14. Januar w\u00e4re er 80 Jahre alt geworden. <\/p>\n

Vom Aushilfsmusiker zum Hit-Songwriter<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Allen Toussaint wurde 1938 in New Orleans geboren, wo er in einem sogenannten \u201eShotgun House\u201c aufwuchs, einem von jenen billigen Einfamilienh\u00e4usern, die in der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft als Symbolbild f\u00fcr Armut stehen. Eine Nachbarin brachte Toussaint als Kind das Klavierspielen bei. Seine gr\u00f6\u00dfte musikalische Inspiration war der elegante Mambo-Stil der lokalen Piano-Legende Professor Longhair. <\/p>\n

Toussaints k\u00fcnstlerische Karriere begann als Aushilfsmusiker: Im Alter von 17 Jahren sprang er bei einem Konzert f\u00fcr Huey \u201ePiano\u201c Smith ein, wenig sp\u00e4ter spielte er anonym auf Fats Dominos<\/a> Single \u201eI Want You To Know\u201c. Toussaint erinnerte sich 1988 in einem Interview mit dem Radio-Sender NPR: \u201eDas war damals so \u00fcblich. Fats Domino war au\u00dferhalb des Landes unterwegs, da hat sein Produzent Dave Bartholomew mich einfach angerufen und gefragt, ob ich wie er spielen kann. Und ich hab’s einfach gemacht.\u201c<\/p>\n

1960 begann Toussaint f\u00fcr das lokale Label Minit Records als Manager und Produzent zu arbeiten. Hier begann seine Hochphase als Songwriter, zahlreiche von ihm geschriebenen Songs wurden in den H\u00e4nden anderer K\u00fcnstlerInnen zu gro\u00dfen Erfolgen: The Dave Clark Five machten sein \u201eI Like It Like That\u201c zum Hit, genau wie Otis Redding<\/a> mit \u201ePain Of My Heart\u201c. Sein Song \u201eFortune Teller\u201c wurde sowohl von The Rolling Stones als auch von The Who und The Hollies erfolgreich gecovert. <\/p>\n

Toussaints Sp\u00e4twerk<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Andere Songs brauchten ein paar Dekaden, um zu Hits zu werden: 1970 schrieb Toussaint \u201eHere Come The Girls\u201c f\u00fcr den S\u00e4nger Ernie K-Doe \u2013 38 Jahre sp\u00e4ter bildete das St\u00fcck die Grundlage f\u00fcr die erfolgreiche Sugababes-Single \u201eGirls\u201c. Au\u00dferdem war er noch bei einem weiteren Song involviert, der nicht aus dem Pop-Radio wegzudenken ist: \u201eLady Marmelade\u201c, geschrieben f\u00fcr die Disco-Girlgroup Labelle, produziert von Allen Touissant, (sp\u00e4testens) unsterblich gemacht in der Version von Christina Aguilera, M\u00fda, Pink und Lil‘ Kim f\u00fcr den Soundtrack des 2001er Musicals \u201eMoulin Rouge\u201c. <\/p>\n

Nachdem der Hurricane Katrina 2005 gro\u00dfe Teile von New Orleans zerst\u00f6rte, zog Toussaint noch New York, wo seine Karriere frischen Wind aufnahm: Gemeinsam mit Elvis Costello<\/a> ver\u00f6ffentlichte er 2006 das Kollaborationsalbum \u201eThe River In Reverse\u201c. Ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter nahm er ein Duett mit Paul McCartney<\/a> auf \u2013 und einen Song des Menschen, der seine Karriere startete: \u201eI Want To Walk You Home\u201c von Fats Domino. Im Jahr 2015 starb Allen Toussaint an den Folgen eines Herzanfalls, w\u00e4hrend eines Tour-Aufenthaltes in Madrid. Er wurde 77 Jahre alt.<\/p>\n
