Kein leichtes Erbe, das der junge Seun Kuti antreten musste: Sein Vater war nicht nur der nigerianische K\u00f6nig des Afrobeats \u2013 er hatte das Genre erfunden. So war der S\u00e4nger und Saxophonist Seun Kuti bereits mit 14 Jahren Frontmann von Egypt 80, der besten Band des Landes.<\/p>\n<p>Seitdem sind 21 Jahre vergangen, und Seun Kuti &amp; Egypt 80 ver\u00f6ffentlichen ihr mittlerweile viertes Album. \u201eBlack Times\u201c ist ganz klar ein Afrobeat-Album in der Tradition von \u201eZombie\u201c oder \u201eBeasts Of No Nation\u201c, den Meilensteinen seines Vaters. Doch Seun Kuti ist nicht hier, um das Genre neu zu erfinden \u2013 er ist hier, um es zu regieren, mit fester Hand und m\u00e4chtigen Grooves.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>An der Wurzel des Stammbaums<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Von der ersten Sekunde an spielen Egypt 80 mit ihren Muskeln: \u201eLast Revolutionary\u201c beginnt mit virtuos verzahnten Highlife-Gitarren und Bl\u00e4sern, w\u00e4hrend Bass und Drums gnadenlos voranschreiten. Dar\u00fcber spricht der Frontmann als \u201eGeneral Seun Kuti\u201c einen bedauernden Toast an die Vergangenheit: \u201eTo the roots of the family tree \/ To the lost bridges of our history.\u201c Diese Energie zwischen Kuti und seiner Band ist ansteckend: Wenn im Titeltrack der E-Gitarren-Opa Carlos Santana auf ein Solo vorbeischaut, klingt er zum ersten Mal seit drei\u00dfig Jahren nicht wie ein alter Mann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eBlack Times\u201c gestaltet sich mit seinem konstanten Beat-Gewitter als schwei\u00dftreibende, k\u00f6rperliche Erfahrung. Einzig und allein \u201eAfrican Dreams\u201c gew\u00e4hrt dem H\u00f6rer eine Verschnaufspause. Doch selbst im gem\u00fctlichen Reggae-Tempo spielen Seun Kuti &amp; Egypt 80 in ihrer eigenen Liga: Der dubbige Bass und die pr\u00e4zisen Drums haben alle F\u00e4den in der Hand, w\u00e4hrend die melancholischen Bl\u00e4ser-Fanfaren und ein transzendentales Saxophon-Solo jedes Joint-Feuer vor Ehrfurcht verglimmen lassen.<\/p>\n<p>Doch die wahre St\u00e4rke von \u201eBlack Times\u201c liegt in Kutis Texten: \u201eSo many generations lost to vanity \/ lost to hipocrisy\u201c, lamentiert er an einer Stelle \u00fcber die leere Konformit\u00e4t seiner Mitmenschen, w\u00e4hrend er sich im Titeltrack das omnipr\u00e4sente Thema Fake News und in \u201eC.P.C.D.\u201c die korrupte Regierung Nigerias vorkn\u00f6pft. Das versteht er mindestens so gut wie sein Vater: Die tanzbaren, guten Vibes der Musik mit bitterb\u00f6sen Worten zu untergraben.
