Die Band als die Hautfarbe transzendierende Familie: Sly & The Family Stone<\/h6>\n

Auf die Frage, warum der titelgebende Song \u201eRiot\u201c seines 1971 ver\u00f6ffentlichten Opus Magnum \u201eThere\u2018s A Riot Goin‘ On\u201c nur aus f\u00fcnf Sekunden Stille besteht, hatte Funk-Altmeister Sly Stone im Jahr 1997 eine sehr einfache Antwort: \u201eIch hatte den Eindruck, dass es am besten gar keine Revolten geben sollte.\u201c Der subversive Revolution\u00e4r wird am 15. M\u00e4rz 2018 75 Jahre alt.<\/p>\n

Eine Band als multikulturelle Familie<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Sylvester Stewart wurde 1943 in Denton, Texas, geboren. Schnell war klar, dass es sich bei ihm um ein musikalisches Wunderkind handelte: Im Alter von elf Jahren beherrschte er bereits Klavier, Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug. In der Highschool spielte er Gitarre in der Doo-Wop-Band The Viscaynes. Stewart war eines von nur zwei dunkelh\u00e4utigen Mitgliedern des Septetts. Diese Gruppe wurde damit zur Blaupause f\u00fcr ein Konzept, das er sp\u00e4ter in seiner Band Sly & The Family Stone umsetzen w\u00fcrde: die Band als multikulturelle Familie.<\/p>\n

Dieses Hautfarbe transzendierende Potential der Pop-Musik erkannte er auch in seinem n\u00e4chsten Job als Radio-DJ, bei dem er wei\u00dfe Bands wie The Beatles und The Rolling Stones Seite an Seite mit schwarzer Soul-Musik auflegte. Gleichzeitig arbeitete Stewart auch als Produzent f\u00fcr das Label Autumn Records, f\u00fcr das er Bands wie The Mojo Men und The Great Society (die erste Band von Grace Slick) aufnahm. Parallel dazu war er als Studio-Keyboarder f\u00fcr Marvin Gaye, The Ronettes, The Righteous Brothers und Dionne Warwick aktiv.<\/p>\n

1966 legte Stewart seinen Geburtsnamen ab. Gemeinsam mit der Trompeterin Cynthia Robinson, dem Bassisten Larry Graham, dem Saxophonisten Jerry Martini und dem Schlagzeuger Greg Errico gr\u00fcndete er im selben Jahr Sly & The Family Stone. Mit ihrem optimistischen, psychedelischen Funk-Rock waren sie einige Jahre lang eine der erfolgreichsten Bands der USA \u2013 ein Status, den sie nicht zuletzt mit einem gefeierten Konzert auf dem legend\u00e4ren Woodstock Festival 1969 zementierten.<\/p>\n

\u201eThere\u2018s A Riot Goin‘ On\u201c<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Doch als die Dekade zu Ende ging, \u00e4nderte sich etwas im Hause Stone: Infolge seines stetigen Kokain-Konsums wurde der K\u00fcnstler zunehmend paranoider. Er verlie\u00df sein Haus nicht mehr ohne Bodyguards, w\u00e4hrend AktivistInnen der Black-Panther-Bewegung ein aufw\u00fchlendes Protestalbum von ihm verlangten. Sly Stone gab ihnen \u201eThere\u2018s A Riot Goin‘ On\u201c. Es war das vielschichtigste Funk-Album, das die Welt bisher gesehen hatte, mit d\u00fcsteren Drumcomputer-Beats, komplexen Overdub-Schichten und zynischen, gesellschaftskritischen Texten. Und in der Mitte versteckt: die subtile Protestverweigerung namens \u201eRiot\u201c.<\/p>\n

\u201eThere\u2018s A Riot Goin\u2018 On\u201c sollte einer der letzten kreativen H\u00f6hepunkte im Leben von Sly Stone sein. Es folgten Dekaden voller Drogeneskapaden, Scheidungen, halbherziger Reunions und finanziellem Bankrott. 2009 erschien die Dokumentation \u201eComing Back For More\u201c, die ein trauriges Bild von ihm zeigt: Ein obdachloser Lebemann, der entweder in billigen Motels oder in seinem Campingvan lebt. <\/p>\n

Anl\u00e4sslich seines Geburtstags wird Sly Stone auch im Programm von ByteFM gew\u00fcrdigt. Seine Musik ist am 15. M\u00e4rz 2018 im ByteFM Magazin um 10, 15 und 19 Uhr<\/a> zu h\u00f6ren. Klaus Walter widmete ihm bereits am 6.
