Villagers \u2013 \u201eThe Art Of Pretending To Swim\u201c (Domino)<\/h6>\n

Die Art von Indie-Folk, die Conor O\u2018Brien zusammen mit seiner Band unter dem Namen Villagers produziert, war eigentlich nie richtige \u201eFolk-Musik\u201c. Der Musiker aus Dublin garnierte seine Songs seit dem 2010er-Deb\u00fct \u201eBecoming A Jackal\u201c mit Electronica-Sounds und elektrischem Bass-Dr\u00f6hnen. Das Ergebnis waren Songs, die auch mal in einem dissonanten Schlagzeug-Freakout enden konnten. Es schien, als w\u00e4re das Bild vom klassischen Singer-Songwriter mit Akustikgitarre sein gr\u00f6\u00dfter Feind. <\/p>\n

Die Ausnahme machte \u201eDarling Arithmetic\u201c aus dem Jahr 2015, das bisher letzte Studioalbum des Quintetts. Eine offenherzige Folk-Platte, auf der O\u2018Brien sich so zur\u00fcckgenommen und nackt wie nie zuvor zeigte. Es sollte das letzte Aufb\u00e4umen seines inneren Liedermachers gewesen sein: Das nun erscheinende vierte Album ist meilenweit von den Beschr\u00e4nkungen des sogenannten Indie-Folk entfernt. Stattdessen pr\u00e4sentieren Villagers mit \u201eThe Art Of Pretending To Swim\u201c einen eklektischen Strudel aus Soul, Folktronica und Barock-Pop, der einen im sanften Sog Richtung Meeresboden zieht.<\/p>\n

Schwimmen im mondf\u00f6rmigen Pool<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Song Nr. 1 \u201eAgain\u201c macht bereits klar, was alles in diesem Album steckt: Ein klassisches Zupfmuster, begleitet von mechanischen 808-Beats, bis am Ende ein m\u00e4chtiger Moog-Synthesizer den Song verschlingt. O\u2018Briens Lyrik ist dabei voller abstrakter Melancholie: \u201eI let it flow \/ Into a bottomless hole again\u201c, s\u00e4uselt er \u00fcber dieses warme Gewitter von einem Song.<\/p>\n

O\u2018Briens spielerischer Umgang mit wieselflinkem Gitarrengezupfe und verstelltem Gesang erinnert an Dirty Projectors, seine mehrdimensionalen Arrangements an die barocke Sch\u00f6nheit von Grizzly Bear. Was er seinen KollegInnen auf dieser Platte voraus hat, ist Swagger: \u201eLove came with all that it brings \/ Including the fact that it stings \/ Like a motherfucker\u201c, ist die Zeile des Jahres, die O\u2018Brien in \u201eLove Came With All That It Brings\u201c im zartesten Falsett vortr\u00e4gt. In \u201eA Trick Of The Light\u201c steuert ein warmer Bass-Groove eine Portion R&B zu diesem Stilmix bei, in \u201eLong Time Waiting\u201c wird sogar ordentlich geglitcht und gefunkt.<\/p>\n

Dabei verlieren Villagers zum Gl\u00fcck nie, was ihre Musik so gro\u00df macht: Das Gesp\u00fcr f\u00fcr gro\u00dfe Empathie und gro\u00dfe Trauer. Im letzten Song \u201eAda\u201c umarmen sich Piano und Gitarre, umringt von astralen Chorstimmen und Bl\u00e4sern, als w\u00fcrde O\u2018Brien kopf\u00fcber in den mondf\u00f6rmigen Pool springen, den Radiohead auf ihrem letzten Album geschaffen haben. Und dieser Mann muss einem nichts vormachen: schwimmen, das kann er.<\/p>\n
