Dr. John ist tot. Die Funk-Ikone aus New Orleans ist am vergangenen Donnerstag an einem Herzanfall gestorben. Er wurde 77 Jahre alt.<\/p>\n

Dr. John wurde am 20. November 1941 als Malcolm John Rebennack in New Orleans geboren. Sein Vater, ein Plattenladenbetreiber, weckte bei ihm fr\u00fch eine Begeisterung f\u00fcr den Jazz der lokalen Legenden Louis Armstrong und King Oliver. Im Alter von 13 Jahren lernte er Professor Longhair kennen, dessen glamour\u00f6se B\u00fchnenoutfits ihn f\u00fcr sein eigenes flamboyantes Auftreten inspirierte. Kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter begann Rebennack seine professionelle Musiker-Karriere \u2013 seinen ersten festen Job als Produzent in den Ace Studios, Mississippi, bekam er als 16-J\u00e4hriger.<\/p>\n

Als junger Mann war Rebennacks Hauptinstrument die Gitarre. Das \u00e4nderte sich, als sein linker Ringfinger bei einer Schie\u00dferei in Jackson, Mississippi, verletzt wurde. Sein neues Lieblingsinstrument wurde das Piano \u2013 erneut inspiriert von Professor Longhair. Mitte der 60er-Jahre zog er nach Los Angeles, wo er als Teil der ber\u00fcchtigten Wrecking Crew (zu der auch der k\u00fcrzlich verstorbene Schlagzeuger Hal Blaine<\/a> geh\u00f6rte) zu einem der gefragtesten Studio-Musiker der Stadt wurde. Rebennack spielte beispielsweise auf \u201eFreak Out!\u201c, dem Deb\u00fct von Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention, sowie auf Studioalben von Canned Heat und Sonny & Cher.<\/p>\n

New Orleans R&B und Voodoo-Funk<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Ende der 60er-Jahre begann Rebennack unter dem Namen Dr. John, The Night Tripper seine Solokarriere. Auf seinem 1968er-Deb\u00fctalbum \u201eGris-Gris\u201c kombinierte er traditionellen New-Orleans-R&B und Jazz mit Psychedelic-Rock und der in seinem Heimatstaat Louisiana popularisierten Voodoo-Praxis. Auf der B\u00fchne und auf seinen Albencovern trug er psychedelischen Kopfschmuck und Voodoo-Ketten. Im Verlauf der 70er-Jahre f\u00fcgte er dieser esoterischen Mischung noch eine geh\u00f6rige Portion Groove hinzu \u2013 seine 1973 erschienene, von New-Orleans-R&B-Pate Allen Toussaint<\/a> produzierte LP \u201eIn The Right Place\u201c gilt gleicherma\u00dfen als Geburtsstunde und als H\u00f6hepunkt des New-Orleans-Funk.<\/p>\n

Parallel zu seiner florierenden Solokarriere blieb Dr. John stets ein aktiver Studiomusiker. Er begleitete The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Carly Simon, James Taylor, B.B. King und Neil Diamond. 1978 sang er in Martin Scorseses ikonischer Konzert-Doku \u201eThe Last Waltz\u201c seinen Song \u201eSuch A Night\u201c<\/a>, begleitet von The Band. Das unverw\u00fcstliche Piano inmitten von Spiritualizeds apokalyptischem Heroin-Epos \u201eCop Shoot Cop\u201c<\/a> wurde von ihm gespielt. Rebennacks vorletztes Album wurde von Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) produziert, ein langj\u00e4hriger Verehrer. Seine letzte LP, \u201eSke-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch\u201c erschien im August 2014. Sein Geburtstag, der 20. November, ist seit 2017 in New Orleans der offizielle Dr. John Day.<\/p>\n
