Beastie Boys \u2013 \u201ePaul\u2018s Boutique\u201c<\/h6>\n

Musikalische 180-Grad-Wendungen standen f\u00fcr Beastie Boys von Anfang an auf der Tagesordnung. Kurz bevor Michael \u201eMike D\u201c Diamond, Adam \u201eMCA\u201c Yauch und Adam \u201eAd-Rock\u201c Horowitz auf ihrem 1986er Deb\u00fct \u201eLicensed To Ill\u201c HipHop und Rock-Gitarren verschmolzen, waren sie noch eine Punk-Band in der Tradition von Black Flag oder Minor Threat. Vom hyperaktiven Hardcore zu Rap-Rock in weniger als zwei Jahren. Man h\u00e4tte eigentlich erwarten k\u00f6nnen, dass so eine Band nicht lange auf der Stelle treten wird.<\/p>\n

Doch auf der Quantensprung, den Beastie Boys mit ihrem n\u00e4chsten Album hinlegten, kam doch recht unerwartet. Blendet man den ironischen doppelten Boden aus, war \u201eLicensed To Ill\u201c eine ziemlich stumpfe LP. Die drei Musiker machten sich mit Tracks wie \u201e(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)\u201c \u00fcber inhaltsleere Sauflieder lustig \u2013 unz\u00e4hlige Frat Boys adaptierten den Song dennoch als unironische Partyhymne. Doch auf \u201ePaul’s Boutique\u201c gab es keine Songs zum Mitgr\u00f6hlen. Stattdessen schufen Mike D, MCA und Ad-Rock ein Sampling-Meisterwerk \u2013 das am 25. Juli 2019 30 Jahre alt wird.<\/p>\n

Kaleidoskopartiges Sampling-Monster<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Der von Rick Rubin produzierte Sound von \u201eLicensed To Ill\u201c war m\u00e4chtig und roh, aber eindimensional. Die br\u00e4sigen Rock-Riffs und donnernden Drums lie\u00dfen nicht viel Raum f\u00fcr Subtilit\u00e4t. F\u00fcr den Nachfolger suchten Beastie Boys neue Partner \u2013 und fand ein Duo namens Dust Brothers. Die kalifornischen Produzenten arbeiteten gerade an einem instrumentalen Album, zusammengestellt aus unz\u00e4hligen Samples aus verschiedensten Genres. Als die drei MCs diesen musikalischen Flickenteppich zum ersten Mal h\u00f6rten, waren sie begeistert \u2013 und \u00fcberzeugten das Duo davon, sie dar\u00fcber rappen zu lassen.<\/p>\n

Auf dem Papier liest sich das wie pure Reiz\u00fcberflutung: Drei hyperaktive MCs rappen \u00fcber experimentelle Sampling-Collagen. \u201ePaul’s Boutique\u201c ist tats\u00e4chlich gef\u00fcllt mit Momenten, die eigentlich nicht funktionieren sollten. In \u201eEgg Man\u201c erklingen die atonalen Streicher aus dem \u201ePsycho\u201c-Soundtrack \u00fcber eine Curtis-Mayfield-Bassline, w\u00e4hrend Mike D, MCA und Ad-Rock \u00fcber ihr liebstes Hobby rappen: PassantInnen mit Eiern zu beschmei\u00dfen. Dust Brothers und Beastie Boys spielen mit musikalischen Legenden wie Kinder mit Superhelden-Figuren \u2013 doch anstatt Batman gegen Spiderman k\u00e4mpfen zu lassen, jammen hier The Beatles mit Isaac Hayes, The Eagles mit Ramones.<\/p>\n

Und dennoch funktioniert auf diesem Album so ziemlich alles. Die unz\u00e4hligen musikalischen Zitate und Querverweise vermischen sich zu einem Popkultur-Strudel, der einen von der ersten Sekunde an nicht mehr losl\u00e4sst. Der Groove und die Flows der MCs im Zentrum sind so \u201eon point\u201c und mitrei\u00dfend, dass die st\u00e4ndigen Texturwechsel um sie herum eine fast schon psychedelische Wirkung entfalten.<\/p>\n

Dass dieses kaleidoskopartige Sampling-Monster von einem Album nicht so oft verkauft wurde wie der Vorg\u00e4nger, liegt auf der Hand. Daf\u00fcr war es umso einflussreicher: F\u00fcr Sampledelia-Acts wie DJ Shadow oder The Avalanches wurde \u201ePaul’s Boutique\u201c zur Bibel. Und auch zeitgen\u00f6ssische HipHop-Acts lie\u00dfen sich von diesem Wahnsinn beeinflussen: Public Enemys Chuck D verriet einst in einem Interview das \u201edreckigste Geheimnis des HipHop\u201c: dass das Album mit den besten Beats von drei wei\u00dfen, j\u00fcdischen Jungs stammte.<\/p>\n
