Es l\u00e4utet, bis sich schlie\u00dflich die gute alte Mailbox einschaltet: \u201eHey um \/ Sorry I\u2019m not home \/ Yet \/ Uh, if you\u2019re searching for me \/ Shit! I\u2019m probably searching for myself.\u201c Die Stimme auf dem Band ist die von Sampa Tembo und die Ansage ist mehr als ein stimmungsvolles Field Recording. Eher ein Hinweis darauf, wohin die Reise auf Sampa The Greats Deb\u00fctalbum \u201eThe Return\u201c gehen soll: Nach Hause, was auch immer das ist.<\/p>\n<p>Im Falle von Tembo eine mehr als berechtigte Frage. Die Mittzwanzigerin ist n\u00e4mlich eine ausgewachsene Kosmopolitin. Geboren 1993 in Sambia, aufgewachsen in Botswana, zog es die junge K\u00fcnstlerin nach der Schule f\u00fcr ein Tontechnik-Studium nach Los Angeles und San Francisco. Schlie\u00dflich 2014 der Umzug nach Sydney, wo sie innerhalb k\u00fcrzester Zeit in der lokalen HipHop-Szene Fu\u00df fasste. Kein Wunder also, dass sich Tembo danach erst mal neu sortieren musste.<\/p>\n<p>Das Ergebnis: Die beiden sehr guten Mixtapes \u201eThe Great Mixtape\u201c und <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/alben-der-woche\/sampa-the-great-birds-and-the-bee9-album-der-woche-74078\/\">\u201eBirds And The BEE9\u201c<\/a>. Auf ihren ersten Ver\u00f6ffentlichungen zeigte sich Tembo bereits als variable Rapperin mit unversch\u00e4mt gutem Flow und einem ausgepr\u00e4gten politischen Bewusstsein \u2013 das sie nach eigenen Angaben ihrer Jugend in Botswana verdankt.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Auf der Suche nach der eigenen Identit\u00e4t<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Auf \u201eMwana\u201c, dem Opener von \u201eThe Return\u201c vermischt Tembo Erinnerungen an die botswanische Heimat mit ihren Erfahrungen in der Diaspora. Die Hook ist in der Stammessprache ihrer Mutter gesungen, Mwana bedeutet \u201eKind\u201c. Neben einem Sprachsample von Tembos Mutter tritt auch ihre Schwester als S\u00e4ngerin in Erscheinung. Im flatternd groovenden Track scheint ihre Familie jedenfalls eine hei\u00dfe Spur auf der Suche nach Tembos Identit\u00e4t und ihrem Zuhause zu sein.<\/p>\n<p>Mit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/sampa-the-great-veroeffentlicht-neuen-song-final-form-90108\/\">\u201eFinal Form\u201c<\/a> hat sich Tembo quasi ihre eigene Einlaufmusik geschrieben. Ein trockenes, treibendes Schlagzeug, Trompeten und ein souliger Chor t\u00e4nzeln erwartungsvoll Richtung Ring. Dort steigt die Rapperin durch die Seile und pusht sich mit betont l\u00e4ssigem, nasalem Flow hoch: \u201eGreat state I\u2019m in \/ In all states I\u2019m in \/ I might final form \/ In my melanin \/ Black Power!\u201c Melanin, das Farbpigment der Haut, wird so f\u00fcr Tembo ein empowerndes Motiv, das sie im Verlauf der Platte \u00f6fter auftauchen l\u00e4sst.<\/p>\n<p>Tembos Suche nach Identit\u00e4t und Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit ist komplex und facettenreich \u2013 wie ihre Songs. Sie serviert souligen Rap (\u201eFreedom\u201c), vertr\u00e4umt-jazzige Tracks (\u201eGrass Is Greener\u201c) und mit \u201eTime\u2019s Up\u201c sogar eine bissige Abrechnung mit Rassismus und Ausbeutung im Musikbusiness. Die breite Palette ergibt Sinn: Identit\u00e4t ist eben eine fluide, immer wandelbare Sache. Im neunmin\u00fctigen Epos \u201eThe Return\u201c wird dann auch klar, was wirklich mit der R\u00fcckkehr gemeint ist: \u201eReturning to the self of myself\u201c \u2013 eine Reise ins Innerste also.
