Zeuge einzigartiger musikalischer Aufeinandertreffen. Es war der Austragungsort f\u00fcr das zweite \u201eBlack And African Festival Of Arts And Culture\u201c, kurz \u201eFestac 77\u201c, bei dem einige der gr\u00f6\u00dften K\u00fcnstler*innen aus der afrikanischen Diaspora auftreten sollten. US-amerikanische Gr\u00f6\u00dfen wie Stevie Wonder oder Sun Ra und sein Arkestra standen auf dem Line-up, genau wie der brasilianische Superstar Gilberto Gil oder die s\u00fcdafrikanische Ikone Miriam Makeba. <\/p>\n<p>Doch die spannendste Musik spielte fernab der B\u00fchne. Fela Kuti, der sowohl damals wie heute wohl einflussreichste Musiker Nigerias, boykottierte das vom Milit\u00e4r-Diktatoren Olusegun Obasanjo gesponserte Festival. Stattdessen lud er teilnehmende K\u00fcnstler*innen in seinen eigenen Club The Shrine ein. Beseelt vom Palmwein trafen sich Wonder, Gil und andere unter Kutis Dach und jammten gemeinsam mit seiner Band Africa &#8217;70. Es war ein ganz eigenes, freies \u201eKonter-Festac\u201c. Die Sessions wurden nicht aufgenommen, sie waren pur in ihrem Moment. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Jams, die \u00fcber 40 Jahre nachhallen<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Doch selbst wenn sie aufgenommen worden w\u00e4ren, w\u00fcrde es sie wahrscheinlich heute nicht mehr geben. Nur sieben Tage nach Ende des offiziellen \u201eFestac\u201c lie\u00df Obasanjo The Shrine st\u00fcrmen und Kutis Club zerst\u00f6ren. <\/p>\n<p>Was hat die Kontroverse um das Festac 77 mit \u201eRejoice\u201c zu tun, dem nun erscheinenden Album von Tony Allen und Hugh Masekela? Beide Musiker waren damals vor Ort, beide jammten 1977 gegen das Milit\u00e4r-Regime. Allen war der Schlagzeuger von Kutis Band Africa &#8217;70 und damit einer der ma\u00dfgeblichen Architekten des Afrobeat. Masekela war einer der zum Festival eingeladenen Musiker, einer der wichtigsten K\u00fcnstler S\u00fcdafrikas, der mit seiner Trompete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byte.fm\/blog\/news\/jazz-pionier-hugh-masekela-ist-tot-76087\/\">schon in den 60er-Jahren<\/a> die US-amerikanischen Billboard-Charts eroberte. <\/p>\n<p>\u201eRejoice\u201c ist nicht nur eine Erinnerung an fr\u00fchere Glanzzeiten, es ist auch ein Schwanengesang. Masekela und Allen nahmen die Grundsteine des Albums 2010 in London auf. Bis zu Masekelas Tod im Jahr 2018 wurde es nie fertig gestellt. Erst letztes Jahr beendete Allen die gemeinsame Arbeit, mithilfe von Musikern j\u00fcngerer Generationen: Ezra-Collective-Mitglied Joe Armon-Jones sitzt an den Tasten, der vielbesch\u00e4ftigte Studio-Musiker Tom Herbert (Lana Del Rey, Adele) zupft den Bass. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Vitaler Schwanengesang<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Dieses Album f\u00fchlt sich jedoch \u00fcberhaupt nicht an wie ein Schwanengesang. Stattdessen strotzt es nur so vor Vitalit\u00e4t. Die beiden Altmeister zeigen sich in H\u00f6chstform: Allen l\u00e4sst seine Drums in der Single \u201eWe\u2018ve Landed\u201c in alle Richtungen gleichzeitig ausschlagen \u2013 ohne wie ein Angeber zu wirken. Jeder Schlag, Jede Kick, jede Fu\u00dfspitzenbewegung dient dem Groove. Masekelas Trompete windet sich elegant durch Allens dichte Beats, wie eine Schlange durchs hohe Gras. Ihre Komfortzone verlassen beide nie, stattdessen spielen beide ihre St\u00e4rken maximal aus. In \u201eJubulani\u201c sind Trompete und Schlagzeug eine solche Einheit, die Bl\u00e4ser-Salven so eng mit den Snare-Wirbeln verbunden, dass man denkt, diese beiden w\u00fcrden seit Jahrzehnten zusammenspielen. <\/p>\n<p>\u201eLagos never gonna be the same without Fela\u201c, singt ein Chor in \u201eNever\u201c, einem Tribut an Allens alten Bandleader und Masekelas alten Gastgeber. Allen spielt dazu einen l\u00e4ssigen Shuffle in bester Africa-70-Tradition, w\u00e4hrend Masekela seine Trompete in herrlich freien Kreisen ziehen l\u00e4sst.
