Extra Trouble – Jack Smith in Frankfurt
Unter diesem Titel wird im November der New Yorker Avantgardekünstler Jack Smith gewürdigt. Er gilt als Pionier des Queer Cinema und pflegte die Vorführung seiner Filme live mit Musik vom Plattenspieler zu begleiten. Die Frankfurter Filmwissenschaftlerin Karola Gramann ist neben Heide Schlüpmann die Kuratorin von „Extra Trouble“. In der heutigen Ausgabe von „Was ist Musik“ stellt Karola Gramann die Arbeit von Jack Smith vor und bringt passende Musik mit.

„All this useless beauty“ – das ist der Versuch, Jack Smith in die Geschichte zurückzuschreiben. Oder: die Geheimgeschichte des Jack Smith und seiner Nachkommen in der Popkultur der vergangenen vierzig Jahre neu zu schreiben. Mit naheliegenden Kandidaten wie Velvet Underground, Tony Conrad oder Angus MacLise, aber nicht nur mit diesen. “Jack Smith is the daddy of us all”, hat der Schauspieler, Regisseur und Autor Charles Ludlam gesagt. Unter den Kindern und Kindeskindern von Jack Smith finden sich Künstler wie Rufus Wainwright, Justus Köhncke, Coco Rosie und Antony & The Johnsons. Und möglicherweise auch Elton John. Nicht alle dieser Kinder wissen, wer ihr Vater ist. Viele von ihnen haben erst in den letzten Jahren das Queer Cinema des Jack Smith für sich entdeckt. Andere adaptieren Smiths Bilderwelt ohne es zu wissen, in einem hollywoodhalluzinatorischen (Juliane Rebentisch) Akt der unbewußten Aneignung. You don´t have to know Jack Smith, to be a Smithianite. Oder Smithianerin. Wieder andere beziehen sich direkt auf Jack Smith, sei es in ihrer Musik, bei der Gestaltung ihrer Covers oder in Interviews, Antony Hegarty etwa oder Justus Köhncke. Über zwanzig Jahre nach seinem Tod finden sich in der Popkultur viele Spuren des Jack Smith, an ungeahnten Orten. Die (il)legitimen Kinder drängen zur Sichtbarkeit. “Jack Smith is the daddy of us all”.

Aus einem Interview von Jens Balzer mit Antony Hegarty in Spex 01/09:
“In 1990 I started studying experimental theatre at New York University. I specialised on people like Jack Smith, one of the founders of the queer undergroundfilm, among other films he made “Normal Love” with Mario Montez. Or Charles Ludlam, one of the founders of the queer theatre group Ridicoulous Theatre who had died from aids two years earlier. Many of the artists, that people like me admired and for whom we came to New York had recently died from aids. We studied their work, to keep the memory alive and to archive their work. In the early nineties the queer New York was one single big graveyard. They all died, everything disappeared, a whole culture, our culture disappeared.”
JB: Did you see relations to older Drag-Theatergroups like The Cockettes from San Francisco during your studies?
Antony: “The Cockettes happened before my time, but one of their authors was my professor at NYU. I studied queer theory, with him I went to Washington park and he drew me a family tree: it all began with Jack Smith, then there was the Ridiculous Theatre, then there was Hibiscus, who had studied with Jack Smith and later went on to San Francisco to found the Cockettes and, later, The Angels of Light. Jimmy Camicia saw The Angels of Light and founded The Hot Peaches; Betty Bourne saw The Hot Peaches, went back to London and founded The Bloolips; Johanna and I saw The Bloolips and founded the Blacklips...that´s our family tree.”
JB: What was the name of this teacher?
Antony: Martin Worman. He made his Ph D on the Cockettes and he visited all of them, one after the other, on their dying beds and interviewed them. At this time, nobody was interested in the Cockettes any more, and he wanted to keep the memory, save the heritage. Martin died in 1993 and that was the end of the history of The Cockettes, hardly anyone who was involved had survived. And nobody cared any more. With Jack Smith, it was a similar story. Years after his death, his complete archives of the underground film of the sixties and seventies have been found in plastic bags in a basement at the piers of Manhattan. I´ve been working as a waiter at that time and one day Penny Arcade, the famous lesbian performer and author came to my café and cried: “we must save these things”, she said, “Jack´s material in garbage bags down there.” We called some people and saved the material.”

Jack Smith bezeichnete seine einzigartige, interdisziplinäre Mischung aus Experimentaltheater, Performance, Film- und Diamaterial zusammen mit der Musik aus seiner eigenen umfangreichen Schallplattensammlung als „live film“.
John Zorn (*1953) arbeitete in den 1970er und 80er Jahren eng mit Jack Smith zusammen und untermalte dessen Live-Performances mit Smiths Platten. Für die Präsentation im MMK komponierte John Zorn diesen Soundtrack unter Verwendung von Jack Smiths Schallplattensammlung. Stücke mit bezeichnenden Titeln wie The Wonderful World of Aloha, Sounds of Hawai, The Thief of Bagdad, Jewels of the Sea, The Magic Carpet, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherazade und ein Musterbeispiel amerikanischer Sexualerziehung, Sexual Harmony in Marriage von 1961, werden darin zusammengefasst.
