Kele Okereke – im Interview beim Melt!-Festival 2010.
Natürlich ist es vermessen zu behaupten, dass der Frontmann der Band Bloc Party nun endlich machen kann, was er wirklich möchte. Doch die Vermutung liegt nahe, dass er mit seinem Solo-Album „The Boxer“ umsetzt, was er bei Bloc Party nie durchsetzen konnte: Electro-Pop in allen Facetten.
Kele verneint diese Vermutung – mit Schweiß auf der Stirn. Der große, durchtrainierte Sänger schwitzt aber nicht, weil er schwindelt (was er gerne in Interviews tut, hat er mir verraten). Er schwitzt, weil es im „Pressezentrum“ des Melt!-Festivals gefühlte 60 Grad heiß ist.
Mitte Juli in Gräfenhainichen bei Dessau. Das Festival rund um Indie-Pop und elektronische Tanzmusik hat in diesem Jahr Kele eingeladen, um sein Solo-Debüt „The Boxer“ vorzustellen.
Im Gespräch erzählt er von der Produktion des Albums. Eine Band hat ihn unterstützt, er selbst konzentrierte sich voll und ganz auf den Gesang und die eigene Performance. Nur bei wenigen Songs nahm er – wie bei Bloc Party – auch selbst die Gitarre in die Hand.
Kele Okereke ist bei vielen als Diva verschrien, für mich ist er jedoch nur ein Künstler mit eigenem Kopf und voller Tatendrang.
Rückblick: Nach dem Melt! 2009 platzte die Bombe: Bloc Party machen eine Pause. In dieser Pause wird Kele allerdings schnell langweilig. Also macht er sich auf den Weg nach New York, um dort mit XXXChange von der Band Spank Rock in ein Studio zu gehen und „The Boxer“ aufzunehmen. Kele erinnert sich, dass er keine Ahnung von Drum-Machines und Synthies hatte. Er musste für die Produktion der Platte viel lernen. Doch das gab ihm die Möglichkeit, sich auszuprobieren und zu machen, was er vorher nie gewagt hatte. Herausgekommen ist dabei eine Sammlung verschiedenster Dancesounds, denen XXXChange dann den letzten Schliff verpasst hat.
Natürlich ist Kele immer noch Kele von Bloc Party. Deshalb sind die Konzertsäle voll. Und deshalb spielt er bei seinem diesjährigen Auftritt beim Melt! auch ein Bloc-Party-Medley. Die Fans feiern ihn, die alten wie die neuen Songs – auch wenn der Gesang nicht immer sauber ist.
Noch mindestens ein Jahr möchte Kele mit „The Boxer“ auf Tour gehen. Genug Zeit, an der eigenen Performance zu feilen. Und wenn er das nicht macht, dann findet man ihn in New York. Die Metropole ist sein Ort für Entspannung.
