Das Gedächtnis ist ein seltsamer Prozess? Besser klingt das auf Englisch.

„Memory is a strange process.“ Mit diesem Satz beginnt David Toop seine Erinnerungen an Steve Cropper, der am 3. Dezember mit 84 gestorben ist. Weiter schreibt Toop: „I recall fragments from distant events, like incomplete snapshots weathered by time as if moments are frozen, clipped and given fragile permanance in the chemistry archive of the body. Of the March 1967 Stax/Volt European tour, staged in the Finsbury Park Astoria, I remember the sweat of Sam & Dave, a glimpse of Sharon Tandy (the often forgotten opening act), Otis Redding's escalating frenzy, a blur of Carla Thomas and then Steve Cropper (lean, back then, in a sharp suit), raising up on one toe to add another millimetre's string bend to his solo in „Green Onions“. I think I became a Telecaster player for life in that second.“

Die Young Marble Giants nehmen schon 1980 „Ode To Booker T.“ auf, ihre Hommage auf den Organisten und Leader der M.G.'s, der Hausband von Stax, der Band des Memphis Soul, die mixed race Inkarnation des Melting Pot (so der selbstbezügliche Titel ihres Proto-House-Avant-La-Lettre-Tracks). Von Cropper & den M.G.'s führen 1001 Wege in die Gegenwart. Ein paar davon gehen wir heute. Bis heute, gerade eben, hat es gedauert, bis mir auffällt, dass die Marble Giants von der Kolossalen Jugend abgekürzt wären: MG's.
